Album Review
The post-grunge quartet — now adding guitarist and fifth member Justin Rimer — took time to regroup with their families after relentlessly touring in support of their first two albums. The respite helped the bandmembers return to form just in time to taste the devastation of Hurricane Katrina firsthand. All are natives of the Gulf region, and many witnessed friends and family members cope with the storm's destruction. This, combined with the band's self-proclaimed moniker of being music industry underdogs, fueled the album's title and its undaunted resiliency. The lyrics take you through a journey of loss, betrayal, and the inability to control your surroundings. Songs like "Arms of a Stranger," "World So Cold" and "Lie to Me" tell of unreliable relationships and letdowns. Rimer and co-producer Skidd Mills (Saliva, Skillet, Sister Hazel) kept the album edgy, defined, and certainly loud. Like fellow Wind-Up acts Creed and Evanescence, 12 Stones walk the line between Christian and secular rock. Without overt references to godly subjects, however, Anthem lands more firmly on the secular side of the line. The only setback is a straightforward post-grunge sound that distinguishes itself with little more than glittering guitar work. To that end, the lack of reinvention limits 12 Stones to a tiring yet potent sound that is interchangeable with any number of bands peddling similar alt-metal fare (like labelmates Seether, for starters).
Customer Reviews
Nice post grunge
Good album, just as good as their old stuff in my opinion. Here is my track by track review.
Anthem for the underdog-Good, slightly overated, cool guitars and a pretty good chorus. 9/10
Lie to me-Great song, is what got me hooked on the album. 10/10
Broken road-Really slow, not bad i guess, chorus is okay. 7/10
Adrenaline-AWESOME! Love this song, so fun and gets me pumped. 10/10
It was you-Another pretty good song, nothing spectacular but a good message.8/10
This dark day-Cool riff, okay song, riff is the best part though. 7.5/10
World so cold-Best song on album, sounds kinda like three days grace, enough said. 11/10
Arms of a stranger-Least favorite song on the album, sounds like a bad remake of Lie to me. 6/10
Hey love-Average, not great,a little boring but better than the track before it. 6.5/10
Games you play: Great song, really catchy and fun, chorus is great and so is riff. 9.5/10
Once in a lifetime-Took a while to grow on me, gets better towards the end but the chorus somewhat takes from the song. 7/10
Great album, one of my favorite ones in my library, ill be sure to be following them and checking out more of their music.
A Solid Album
After hearing this over Pandora, I was sold on buying some of their music. Still don't know much about the band, but it seems to have a similar hard alt rock sound as other bands such as Seether, Breaking Benjamin, 10 Years, Staind, and Chevelle, yet some tracks have a more melodic or instrumental twist, which I think is nice once in a while. Bottom line though, if alt rock is your kind of of music, then you'll definately want this CD.
First time
This is my first time listening to them and they sound great
