Excellent, Bumpy Self-Produced Debut Defies its Shoestring Budget
It's refreshing to hear a church band go off-road from the beaten Hillsong/Chris Tomlin path and do their own thing, even if the ride isn't a smooth one. Jared Miller leads on most tracks -- energetic, fist-pumping anthems perfect for packed arenas. The remaining ballads and worshipful serenades are heartfelt and sung with genuine passion -- but unfortunately it's here the album tends to skid off into tall grass; Marley's 'Your Cross' and 'You Hold My Life' could be stronger with backing vocals, or as duets, while Holliday's 'Be Ignited in Our Hearts' suffers somewhat when traveling into higher registers.
'Refuge' comes out of nowhere like a loaded cannon, full of infectious harmonies and PFR-style guitar riffs, and is clearly my favorite of the bunch.
Overall, this is a well-made record, even without considering the zero-budget and time constraints these guys worked under. Recommended.
Unoriginal Lyric Choices
Going all the way for Jesus. I just don't sense a huge amount of deep, God-inspired, faith from those lyrics. Nice energy though, but try to be a tad bit more creative!
