Anthem is New Orleans-native and trumpet player Christian Scott’s musical response to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath so it’s no surprise that the album is imbued with a somewhat dark, melancholy tone. The disc has several nice horn parts featuring a variety of brass and reed combinations: cornet and tenor sax, flugelhorn and straight alto sax, soprano trombone and tenor sax. Marcus Gilmore’s hard-hitting drums and Matt Stevens’s electric guitar move the dramatic music in the direction of rock, funk, hip-hop and fusion, and groups as different as U2 and the Mahavishnu Orchestra are evoked. (The production, which oddly can sound thick and thin at the same time, also pushes the album towards pop.) In a way, Anthem is framed by two versions — one instrumental and the other with vocals — of the title track. The closer, “Anthem (Post Diluvial Adaptation),” finds Brother J of the hip-hop group X-Clan letting loose a torrent of social commentary and features one of Scott’s best solos.

The perfect follow-up
I have been waiting for Christian Scott to release a second album since the day I purchased his first one, and this does not disappoint. In the interm I purchased Donald Harrison's 'Survivor' Album to tide me over because Christian appears on many of the tracts, but really nothing can substitute the real thing. I love the sound of Christian's trumpet, but he also writes for all of the other instraments as though he plays them as well. The guitar and drum pieces that he writes here are just as powerful as on Rewind that, and he has added some more prominant piano on this album. Anthem is just as moving and cohesive as his previous album, and a must have if you liked his first album. Once again, Christian is a unique and wonderful artist. I look forward to many more years of new, interesting, and beautiful music from him.

This album has just about everything on lock.
The tracks, rather than being perplexing and distant, invite the listener to be a participant in the universally human emotions they evoke. A beautifully composed cornucopia of dope sounds, there is something here for everyone. Litany Against Fear has a strong, dark presence; Katrina's Eyes is passionate and awakening... he finds a way to deal with fear, love, destruction, and hope all in one place. Christian Scott is intense, insightful, and in touch with the immediate needs of people listening to music today. If you're looking for more than a cd...here is some music that can be respected as art. And I've never seen a sexier trumpet player =)
