iTunes Review

Brave Saint Saturn began as a side-project by members of Christian ska-punk outfit Five Iron Frenzy, then took on a life of its own over the course of two sci-fi concept albums. After a five-year hiatus, the band resumes on Anti-Meridian, a digital-only release. Members Reese Roper, Dennis Culp, Keith Hoerig, and Andrew Verdecchio continue their saga of wandering astronauts returning to earth in these tracks, though the story line often seems tangential to the individual songs. Pulsating ‘70s-style synthesizers are juxtaposed with blistering electric guitar outbursts and softer acoustic interludes. Rousing anthems like “Hero’s Homecoming,” “Mercenary,” and “These Frail Hands” achieve a big, wailing sound that transcends their retro-kitschy arrangements. A few touches recall Five Iron Frenzy’s zanier side, especially the oddball background chorus on “When You Burn Too Fast.” For the most part, though, these songs are seriously intended, whether their messages are straightforward (“Invictus”) or delivered in parable form (“Starling”). A nicely overwrought cover of ELO’s “Here Is the News” goes well with the originals.

Wake Up, Oh Sleeper, the Daylight Has Come!

I have only three words to say...GREATEST...ALBUM...EVER!!!!! Seriously. I was reduced to excited shreiks when my hardcopy came in the mail. And the music itself...AWESOME! Anyway. Here's the song-by-song breakdown (any songs I skipped are sound bytes that tell the story) -Here is the News (A little weird the first time you listen to it, but this song really, really grows on you. It's now one of my favorite songs on the album. 5/5) -Mercenary (AWESOME...SONG. Totally amazing. Upbeat, but with a biting message. 5/5) -Starling (Incredible message about the sanctity of life. I saw him perform this live at Soulfest. Love it. 4.9/5) -Underground (Yay Dennis! This song has more electronic noises, but it's still really rad. 5/5) -When You Burn Too Fast (Slightly less weird than the demo, kinda funny but serious, with some trombone that I seriously think is a deliberate throwback to the FIF days. 4.9/5) -Through Depths of Twilight (Isn't it funny that the song Reese said he'd re-record if he could is my fave? I LOVE THIS SONG. 5/5) -Hero's Homecoming (Definately a song more oriented to the story, with vivid lyrics and awesome vocals a la Dennis. 5/5) -Fields of the Fallen (Another Dennis. A more mellow, emotional song, but with an edge of hope. 4.9/5) -Always Just Beneath the Dawn (Another one of my faves. The emotion behind this song and the lyrics are just amazing. "There is no love like fathers have for their sons." LOVE IT. 5/5) -Fortress of Solitude (You really need to read the meaning behind this song before you jump to conclusions about what Reese is trying to say. (You can find said explanation on the BS2 boards). Even so, this song has a TOTALLY HARDCORE ending, that I love. 5/5) -Blessed Are the Land Mines (Definately the most biting song on the album. Not my favorite, but still pretty good. 4/5) -Begin Again (Can Dennis do no wrong?! This song is SO SOOTHING. 5/5) -These Frail Hands (Another amazing song. I especially love the round at the end, with the esential choruses of "Daylight" and "In Excelsis Deo". 5/5) -Invictus (Reese performed this one at Soulfest. The perfect way to end the album. This song is so sweet and amazingly beautiful it's almost a tear-jerker. 5/5) All-in-all, this is the greatest album EVER, and everyone in the WORLD should be listening to it. In fact, you should be listening to it right now! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! LONG LIVE BS2!!!!

Anti-Meridian

It's about time! I grew up listening to Five Iron and all the spin-off's afterwards. Great to hear more of Reese Roper, he never disappoints! This record is fantastic, I hope he's got at least a few more left where this came from.

This was worth the wait!

Five years wait was worth it! This is the best of the trilogy!

Biography

Formed: 1995

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

When they're not skanking to the ska-punk sound in Five Iron Frenzy, Reese Roper (guitar/vocals), Dennis Culp (guitar), and Keith Hoerig (bass) compose a swirly, spacedelic style in Brave Saint Saturn. They like to say they're forerunners of "astro-rock," so Brave Saint Saturn's eclectic, noisy mix of turntables, strings, keyboards, and accordions goes for the space-pop thing. Sarabellum issued the trio's debut, So Far from Home, in early 2000. Two years...
