Album Review
It's unclear whether the title of So They Say's full-length debut, Antidote for Irony, was supposed to be a statement on the take-yourself-way-too-seriously aesthetic of the Warped Tour scene of the mid-2000s. However, it fittingly describes So They Say in the sense that their take on emo is a straightforward and melodic one. With one foot rooted in pop-punk sensibilities and the other planted in post-hardcore strain, So They Say have created 11 smooth, emotion-filled songs that — probably due in part to producer Matt Squire's touch — just manage to sidestep a generic branding. Just is the operative word, however, as vocals occasionally resemble a tougher version of the Starting Line circa "Best of Me" and really, that's all been heard before. The album begins well enough with the pensive sentiments of "In Loving Memory Of" — a midtempo tune that ponders one's own funeral among subtle string arrangements and engaging vocals. Near the record's end, however, the band seems to be getting a little ahead of itself with the ambient "Act Like You're Listening, Till It's Your Turn to Talk," whose indulgent and spacy qualities don't quite fit in with the rest of the album. Nevertheless, the record still plays as enjoyable and there are enough strong ideas present to hint at So They Say's ability to expand past their angst beyond this debut.
Customer Reviews
Woe to iTunes.
So. Me and my friend thought it would be fun to buy some music on iTunes. And it was fun. We bought some good stuff. And then we purchased this entire CD. We fell in love with the 30 second clips provided by the iTunes music store. And then, we proceeded to listen to the songs in their entirety. Words cannot express the level of our despair. I'm sorry, So They Say, but your CD did not live up to the 30 second clips. Also, this is the "friend" referred to above and while I agree with the above review, I have come to change my mind on three songs. After being wayyyyy disappointed with the cd I decided to listen to it like 3 months later and I like these 3: In Loving Memory of....., Talking In Circles, Over Exposed Photo last words, good luck and approach with caution.
The Best of It's Genre!
Sure, So They Say may be another modern emo band, but they own the genre. Too bad they formed a little later than some other bands like Fall Out Boy and Taking Back Sunday. Now they are underated because of the mainstream artists. That's okay though. I really don't want this band to be overplayed on the radio. Their best song I think is In Loving Memory. Starts with catchy guitar and lyrics to get you asking for more.
Can't put this album down
For anyone who likes catchy guitar riffs and lyrics, this album needs to be in your iPod. Make sure you put repeat on, because you'll be wanting to listen to this album over and over and over...
