iTunes Review
Chris Thile has shown a maverick streak ever since his days with Nickel Creek. This gifted bluegrass renegade takes even greater chances on Antifogmatic>>, an altogether satisfying successor to the Brothers’ debut album Punch. Thile’s eerie high-tenor vocals and skittering mandolin style sets the tone for this challenging and often startling set. The Appalachian underpinnings of his combo remain evident here, especially on the spirited “Rye Whiskey.” More often than not, though, elements of progressive jazz and European cabaret motifs dominate the music, spurring Thile and his bandmates into complex, tempo-shifting arrangements that heighten the moodiness of the tunes. The weirdly comic “Next to the Trash” and the romantically conflicted “You Are” are indicative of the album’s curious (and haunting) lyric sensibility. The downcast “This Is the Song (Good Luck)” acknowledges current hard times, while “Alex” offers a skewed portrait of a lady friend. As an ensemble, the Punch Brothers display both virtuosity and imagination, with Gabe Witcher earning special mention for his dazzling fiddle flights.

Awesome album
Just what you'd expect from five of the most virtuosic, creative guys in progressive bluegrass (or whatever you wanna call it). A lot more quirky personality and dynamic range here than in 'Punch!', though I can't quite say that anything here comes close to the large-scale craft and continuity of 'blind leaving the blind'. If you haven't heard this band before, this is a more accessible album than the last, but with equally nifty cross-stylization of folk/bluegrass/contemporary chamber music. The Deluxe version is well worth the extra few bucks (um... brandenburg? awesome). Enjoy, and if you haven't caught 'em live– they'll knock your socks off.
Now This is Real Music...
Just when I was losing faith in American music, along comes Chris Thile and these guys. This is the kind of genre-bending music I crave for, and "Antifogmatic" is certainly an accessible album for all music lovers. This group has said in interviews that this album is going more for a rock feel, which is noticeable (they love to cover Radiohead, and for good reason). This album is much better for those who might hasve been frustrated with some of the aspects of "Punch". Songs like "Alex" and "This is the Song" are just plain gorgeous. I hope to see them live today. That would top off an amazing listening experience I get each time I listen to this record:)
Antifogmatic
This is a great album and you should buy it. It's got everything, for those poor souls who couldn't wrap their heads around the greatness of "Punch" (the bands first album) this album offers you a selection of awesome tunes that you can just turn on and listen to, but it also shows you the great talent and musicianship that you can really dig in to, that the Punch Brothers always bring to the table. Every song sounds great and could easily be the best song one the album if it wasnt for all the other songs. Just buy it and enjoy you cant go wrong.
