iTunes Review

“Exotic” doesn’t come close to describing Antony and the Johnson’s 2000 self-titled debut album. Its songs wrap tormented imagery in lush classically-influenced arrangements, fusing spiritual intimations with aching need. The key to it all is singer/songwriter Antony’s spectacular voice, an androgynous multi-octave instrument that’s both unnerving and thrilling, and he applies his velvety groans and tingling cries to lyrics at once confessional and visionary. Some might be put off by the sadomasochistic overtones of numbers like “Cripple and the Starfish” and “Hitler in My Heart” — these tunes take torch singing to the level of self-immolation. But Antony has a way of linking his private obsessions with common human desires. “River of Sorrow” (a moving gospel-tinged aria) and “Deeper Than Love” (set to a gorgeous Gershwin-like melody) draw upon timeless American musical roots in striking ways. The Johnsons — particularly violinist Liz Maranville — bring a stately sort of passion to these tracks. Antony and the Johnsons is a work of beautiful sadness, deeply personal in content yet touching universal chords of emotion.

amazing

first of all...it's ANTONY, not ANTHONY...just to set it straight. it's super soulfulk and makes me wanna cry everytime i hear the vocals. "deeper than love" is my favorite. buy this!

Fresh and different

He has an amazing voice. Really nice track with Björk on her new album. And Adam, his name IS ANTONY.

Antony is amazing...

I first discovered Antony on the Leonard Cohen documentary, "I'm Your Man". He has such a beautiful voice, and is so passionate. I think "Twilight" and "Atrocities" are absolutely, beautifully melancholic.

U.K. born, California-raised Antony Hegarty felt himself to be the consummate outsider until he came face to face with the image of Boy George on the cover of the Culture Club's 1982 debut album, Kissing to Be Clever. He relocated to New York City in 1990, where he found a world more accepting of his avant-garde sensibilities and sexually ambiguous nature. He created the cabaret ensemble Blacklips and modeled himself after Blue Velvet-era Isabella Rossellini and the drag queen that graced the cover...
