Album Review
Released two years after the departure of founding member Jason Lancaster, Anywhere But Here is Mayday Parade's first album for a major label. Lancaster wrote the bulk of the band's debut — the very album that helped secure Mayday Parade's contract with Atlantic — but his former bandmates prove to be capable songwriters in their own right, as Anywhere But Here wields a radio-ready mix of emo anthems and sensitive ballads. David Bendeth, a hyper-prolific producer who rarely works with bands outside of the emo/punk realm, lends his signature polish to the effort, resulting in an album that's both familiar and marketable.

disapointment
While listening to Anywhere But Here the first time, 3 words were running through my head.
"I miss Jason"
MP is no longer the same band. The loss of Jason has affected them greatly. Some may think they have gotten better, but I most assuridly disagree. There is an obvious difference between Anywhere But Here and A Lesson In Romantics or Tales Told By Dead Friends. Lack of in depth lyrics, every song sounds exactly the same, directly quoted song titles... Nothing is the same.
not a single song stuck out to me, all were to monotonous. they had their sad song, I swear this time I mean it. comparable to Miserable at best; all coming from the same stereotypical genre. If I had to pick, that would be the best on the album, but still, at most I consider the best song on here to be....tolerable.
Now if this were a brand new band, I might enjoy it. I just think it is the fact that I know Mayday Parade, and I know what they are capable of, and they are capable of works much greater than this.
If you are a die hard MP fan, here from day one: buy the album, for your collection, whats it gonna hurt. If you are just now discovering MP: do not. do not. do not. waste your money on this album. Go buy A Lesson In Romantics, it is much more worth your money. By far.
overall, Anywhere But Here is a disapointment.

Oh no. Anywhere But Here.
Mayday Parade caught our attention and was set apart by other bands because of their beautiful sound and jaw-dropping lyrics. From TTBDF to ALIR, songs like “One Man Drinking Games” and “Champagne’s For Celebrating” and “Three Cheers For Five Years” were among the best of ANY out there. There’s only one problem with this new album…Jason Lancaster isn’t in it! Mayday Parade is not Mayday Parade WITHOUT the lyrics. They just aren’t. This is why they were BETTER than Boys Like Girls and All Time Low and We The Kings: their lyrics. And Jason wrote every song. So without the lead singer and the lyrics, who can blame them for not living up to expectations? Do NOT get me wrong. I LOVE Mayday Parade. They inspire me in so many ways and they are my favorite band. With that, it’s saddening to be so let down by this album, as they do not live up to expectations. Imagine Paramore without Hayley Williams. Can’t do it! Let’s compare lyrics: “I thought with a month of apart/Together would find us an opening/And moonlight would provide the spark/That I would stumble across the key/Or break down the door to your heart/Forever could see us not you and me/And you'd help me out of the dark/I'd give my heart as an offering, as an offering” to: “Get up, get up/Sing it like you're screaming at me/Get up, get up/I love the way you make it look so easy/East coast, west coast, show me what you've got now/Let's go, let's go” There’s no more: “And she sings she’ll be my tourniquet/As the record on the stereo plays/Her favorite song for two whole days/And the tracks stretched out for miles and miles/And what she’d give for one more smile” Instead, it’s: “I'm bruised and scarred/Save me from this broken heart/All my love will slowly fade and fall apart/Someone please sing this lovesick melody/Call my name if you're afraid/ I'm just a kiss away” They’ve resorted to how every other band sounds. CLICHÉ! And unfortunately that is NOT the Mayday Parade we have all come to love. They sound like a pop band. “I’m just a kiss away”?? Come on! THEY NEED JASON BACK!!!
Ah, Mayday Parade.
You should know that I am being critical and at the same time lenient, because I know this band is talented. But...the loss of their singer and lyricist Jason has changed them. I'm glad, however, that they didn't try and attempt to be Jason in his absence, but rather write and make music in their vision.
I am a die hard Mayday Parade fan. Well, not so that I've attended a concert and have everything MP known to man, but just in a musical sense.
My song by song review is followed by my overall review.
Kids In Love: This song is the epitome of a pop punk emo song. It reminds me of something We The Kings would havw written, but Derek's vocal graces make it a good song. The obvious lack of lyrically genius is obvious already in this first track. If you're looking for a solid poppunk song, it's still a good track.
Anywhere But Here: This song, or at least a clip, was on they're myspace before any other song. Again, a lot of what made MP who they are is not on this track. However, this track is very catchy, and the melody is very much to my liking. The lyrics are a slight step up in my opinion from the first track, but still no where near their past work.
The Silence: The first single released, and a lot of fans first listen at they new MP. Catchy, yes very. Lyrics are still just okay, and the melody is likeable but a bit cliche.
Still Breathing: I very much love the melody to the beginning of this song. The chorus lyrics are a bit...eh. It's an okay track.
Bruised and Scarred: Again, seems like a lot of other pop-punk band songs. But solid. It has the potential to grow on you. I like the emotion in this song.
If you Can't Live Without Me...: It makes me happy just to type a title that is a cut out of the lyrics. This song seems a step up lyrically in some ways, in other ways still typical. "I sorely miss the vibrant glam that's in your eyes" is the lyric that stands out on the album in good lyrics so far. However, the flow of this song is less love-at-first listen as the others, which can end up to be a good thing.
Save your Heart: "Save you heart for someone who leaves you breathless" is probably the highlight of this song. Cute song. That's about it. I'd probably enjoy this song while zoning out on a long plane ride somewhere. It's just kinda, cute. Nothing all that special.
Get Up: I've always enjoyed MP's references to towns and cities. This song brings that back for me. That's my favorite thing about this song. The whole "Get up get up" thing is just so pop-punk cliche, but still...one thing they haven't lacked in is solidness, even if a lack or originality.
Center Of Attention: I also enjoyed they're references to names, i. e. "Katie, don't cry...". It also makes me happy that the title is not directly from the song. I find this is pretty good and one of the better, simply because they put some...personality in this song. Still, lyrics aren't what they should be.
I Swear This Time I Mean It: The obvious gem of the album. This song is much closer to the quality Jason wrote with. The lyrics are the best here that they are on this album. And the melody is beautiful and catchy. I have to say, this could ALMOST probably stand with some of the old Mayday Parade songs and not be crushed into a pulp...but still, no were near the amazing lyrics of Miserable At Best or ANY of the old songs. I like this song, I love this song, but dare compare it to any old song, and it's just a flat out lost cause. I have plenty of songs that I love like this, just from lesser bands than Mayday Parade.
The End: Creative title huh? Just kidding. This song is another pretty good one. Lyrics are a bit better than the beginning of the album. Still typical, but I'd rank it near the top for this album.
So Far Away(Bonus): This reminds me musically of the old Mayday Parade, and I like it, but the lyrics are still as I've described before.
The Memory(Bonus): Not bad. I'm usually a bigger fan of sad songs...but this doesn't feel like Mayday Parade. Still, pretty okay.
So, the final veridict...
The best songs on the album are: I Swear This Time I Mean It, The End, Anywhere But Here, Center Of Attention, If You Can't Live Without Me...
...although each song has something special about it.
You want to know my opinion as a Mayday Parade fan? The loss of Jason changed Mayday Parade. They will no longer have the amazing lyrics and songs that we expect from them. We must now see them as what they are; another pop punk band that has it's own unique touch, but they are no longer the diamond in the rough they once were. I love these boys, and I will support them, and they're new album is SOLID. In fact, it's very solid. It's a very good album.
But as soon as you compare it to the old MP, the album goes from "very good" to "an utter disappointment".
Those who are old fans of Mayday Parade, listen to the album. If you're a fan of the genre in general, you will probably like some songs, maybe the whole album. But don't expect A Lesson In Romantics re-encarnate.
Those who are new, I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH how you MUST listen to the old Mayday Parade albums. They are so much superior to this album that it is ridiculous to ONLY listen to this one.
PLEASE. I don't want Mayday Parade to get written down as just another cliche pop-punk band. They were special, and still are special. They just lost the spark that made them special.
It makes me sad Jason left. This album would have been pure gold.
On the other hand, it bothers me how people seem to think JASON is the pure source of Mayday Parade, which isn't true. Go Radio is good, but they are no old Mayday Parade. Jason doesn't need them to be good, and MP doesn't need him to be good, but they need eachother to be the amazing band of breathtaking music they were before.
