Album Review

On his third album, Anywhere But Here, Chris Cagle's rock influences shine stronger than ever. Not only does he cover Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and name-drop Lynyrd Skynyrd, but "Hey Ya'll" has a defiant, hard-rocking swagger and he favors anthemic mid-tempo tunes built on classic rock to honky tonk ravers. But in a time where Big & Rich and their Muzik Mafia cohorts are rewriting contemporary country music as a flashy, ironic lark, this devotion to classic and Southern rock makes Cagle a bit of a traditionalist, and he wears it well on Anywhere But Here. While some of the power ballads veer a little bit toward the generic, there are a bunch of strong songs here, ranging from the opening "You Might Want to Think About It," where Cagle takes a stand for Middle America, to the soaring "Maria," which may be his best fusion of modern country and AOR. Throughout it all, Cagle remains an appealing singer — his voice may be a little thin, but it's friendly, and it can help sell his tales of love, loss, and living. Anywhere But Here may not be a knockout, but it's a thoroughly likeable, engaging record that proves Chris Cagle is something of a country everyman for 2005, which not only makes him endearing, but a little refreshing next to such oversize personalities as Big & Rich and Toby Keith.

Awesome artist

Very underrated artist love every thing he does

Good, But Frustrating

Chris Cagle has a great voice and a great band, but he needs to match it up with stronger writing talent.

I really enjoyed the title track, "Anywhere But Here", and "When I Get There", but the other songs fell into mediocrity, or in a couple of cases just plain bad. "Wal-Mart" and "You Might Want To Think About It" were the same old tired cliches done by every other country artist. "Maria" and "Miss Me Baby" were pretty good. "Wanted: Dead Or Alive" was a textbook cover, but again, Cagle's voice proves that he has the ability to be just as good of a vocalist as Bon Jovi. "Hey Ya'll" was a song that has potential, but with only two verses it came across as a homework essay that was finished at 4am.

This album could have been better if more time was spent on the writing, and a stronger focus on figuring out Cagle's strengths. In the end I have an album with great vocals and music, with occasional lyrics that make me roll my eyes in frustration.

I know I know

I know I know it was 2005 then but I still freakin love his music now! And don't forget I love his voice soo pure country! My favorite song on this album is Wal-Mart Parking Lot! Which tells us a lot about different types of people in our world! I will be a fan till the day I die, plus I'm only 16. He has influenced me as well as other Country music artists. ~CountryRebel
