iTunes Review
Actress Scarlett Johansson’s solo musical debut is a lovely collection of hazy, ephemeral, narco-pop, a distant cousin to early 4AD artists (Lush, Pale Saints, Lisa Germano) and early-‘70s folk rock (Tim Buckley, Big Star). Produced by TV On the Radio’s Dave Sitek, Johansson pours her longtime affection for Tom Waits into covering a slew of his songs, which is gutsy in itself; not that she’s playing the breathy sex kitten taking on the wizened and whiskered troubadour — she’s got a fairly gutsy, bluesy, crooner style, in fact — but any newcomer taking on such a revered figure has got to have some trepidation. With the songs thoroughly filtered into new creations, the only misstep here is that producer Sitek laid on the atmospherics a bit too thick; when Johansson’s not lost in the fog, her voice is inarguably seductive and powerful. Strip away a layer of keyboard haze on the title track, on “Falling Down” or “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up,” and you’ll find a vocal as strong as any indie chanteuse. Her sharp edges on tracks like “Town With No Cheer” and “Green Grass” pay tribute to her muse — with a little sugar added.

LISTEN.....
LISTEN....CLOSE YOUR EYES & LISTEN.......it's fantastic....simply fantastic...... Those of you claiming she doesn't sing....you're wrong. She's singing this way on purpose. These are Tom Wait covers....listen to the real thing...he can't sing at all..... but it's not about that....it's about the sheer poetry of the lyrcis....and the raw magnetism of the music.....SCARLETT JOHANSSON has created a fantastic debut disc here....totally original......a great tribute to a great lyricist & poet. These songs are interpreted the way he'd want.....and if you simple close your eyes and listen....you'd probably enjoy it..... HIGHLIGHTS... 3. FALLING DOWN 4. ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD 5. FANNIN STREET 6. SONG FOR JO 9. I DON'T WANT TO GROW UP 11.WHO YOU ARE. please stop reviewing this negatively saying oh god she sounds like a man....oh god she's an actress trying to sing now.... ehh.....on and on.....let it go folks. SHE'S NOT BEYONCE' OR FERGIE.....but she's got something her own here.....and it's amazing. It totally grows on you. just because you expected someone with such a pretty face to put out one of those lame POP debuts that everyone delivers, and she didn't, doesn't mean she's awful. This project was about passion for her.....and it shows....
Listen Closely, this is brilliant!!!
Drawing on a variety of musical influences the one band that kept popping into my mind when I listened to this album was late 90's era Spiritualized. Indeed the music is "dense and druggy" as one "professional" critic noted but I wouldn't expect a critic to understand or appreciate the beauty and power of this album after one quick listen before turning in his review to his editor. Depending on the quality of the stereo or headphones you are listening on her voice stands out powerfully and confidently and is not lost in the mix as so many reviews have said. Anybody who said that probably listened to this CD on their computer speakers. This is the first album in years that I have turned the lights out, relaxed in my overstuffed bean-bag chair, and listened to it straight through 3 times in a row. All in all an excellent album with music and vocals that compliment each other wonderfully.
Ahh!
sorry am i the only one who thinks this album is just horrible? everything sounds flat and underwater-ish. i dont know what some people are raving about, i dont hear anything good :[ sorry
