iTunes Review

Kylie Minogue is one of dance music’s most important icons. With her heavy-hitting production team, she has managed to reinvent her dance grooves without ever surrendering the core of her musical being. Over twenty years in the business and new tracks such as “All the Lovers,” “Everything Is Beautiful” and “Better Than Today” sound as fresh as anything she’s ever recorded. “Closer” and “Illusion” turn things more reflective, but only in time for her to pump the groove back up. Where others have tried to inject social consciousness or a heavy message, Minogue has kept the party going. Songwriters Jake Shears and Calvin Harris assist. The synths build worlds of cushioned reality where everyone can bounce without getting hurt. There’s a funk underneath all these layers of vocals and back-up vocals, but the important aspect here is the show. Minogue and her team put together an exciting, pulse-raising production where escapism is the key to success. After all these years, Minogue refuses to rust and is arguably getting better all the time.

"Can You Feel Me In (Your) Stereo?"

I've been a Kylie fan since I heard "I Should Be So Lucky" on American Top 40 back in 1988. I've weathered the years of not being able to get her releases in the USA due to an absence of a Stateside label. In effect, imports were the only way to go. I wasn't alone in this and this practice of buying the import copy of her albums continued through her tenth album, which was entitled X.

I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind delaying her US releases up to 6 to 8 months after the international release. Because of this, her US label pretty much gave up on her after Fever and decided there wasn't a market for her in the States. Well, had her albums been released to coincide with the international schedule, we wouldn't have scooped up the imports to give us our Kylie fix.

So... back to the album. I was really encouraged when I heard "Better Than Today" on Kylie's first tour of North America last autumn. It had a really fun, spirited sound that the songs on X seemed to lack. I enjoyed X, mind you, but really wanted warmer keyboards and more connected vocals. "Better Than Today" seemed indicate that was the direction she was taking.

I was surprised when "All The Lovers" was announced to be the first single off of Aphrodite, but was pleased when I finally heard it. Rather than taking a cue from where X left off, the single seems to have picked up more where "I Believe in You" left off. For me, this is good.

Continuing through, the other stand-out tracks for me are "Get Outta My Way" (which is slated to be the second single), "Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love)", "Aphrodite" and "Can't Beat The Feeling". Sure, there's a little bit of filler on this album; "Closer", "Cupid Boy" and "Looking For An Angel" come to mind, but it's GOOD filler.

One of the surprises was "Everything Is Beautiful". This is about as close to a ballad as one will find on here and it's lush. The layered synths call to mind some of Jam & Lewis's work with the S.O.S. Band, but without the urgent basslines. It's more relaxed and almost feels like a hot summer day as you're zooming down a coastal highway with the windows or top down. I think this track will be one of the tracks that divides the fans, but I really like it.

Is this an album that challenges the artist or the audience? No, it's not. Is it a 43-minute journey to a place where you feel happy and feel like dancing? Yeah... it's that. The most striking thing about this album is that, like Stuart Price's other collaborations, it is warm despite its electronic leanings. There are few dance/pop artists that manage to cross over to that as they firmly entrench themselves in the coldness of their musical machinations. I find that irritating and am glad that the human element and a bit of heart has found its way into the genre via Kylie Minogue.

As Kylie once sang in 1989, "Enjoy it!"

I can fEEl Kylie on my STEreO!

The news was like a shockwave to my brain, It's true she was gone and now she's back...and I can feel her on my STEreO! I feel the euphoric sensation Kylie conveys in her latest studio album, Aphrodite 2010. This much anticipated album fuses her newly discovered American sytlistic inspirations in dance & electornica among many splashes of pop and glamour taking her career to greater heights in music & fashion maintaining her disco Kylie-signature rips on: Get Outta My Way, Cupid Boy, Too Much. This is an enjoyable presentation from the Kylie Minogue, my sister from the other continent.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

On the one hand, pop musically speaking, worldbeaters such as Kylie Minogue are few and far between. Singers and performers of her stature and popularity rarely maintain their power for as long as she was able to. Her streaks of number one singles in both Australia and the U.K. are nearly insurmountable. And yet, on the other hand, her inability to really crack open the American pop market over the course of her career is a story that is heard all too often from groups hailing from nations as pop...
