Album Review

Although it lacks a standout single like "Birdhouse in Your Soul," Apollo 18 is a more consistent album than Flood, overflowing with ideas and pop hooks. The most noteworthy idea may have been "Fingertips," a "suite" of 21 song fragments designed to make each random play a new experience, but the meat of the album lies in pop songs like "I Palindrome I," "My Evil Twin," "She's Actual Size," and "Which Describes How You're Feeling." The album has a slightly darker feeling than its predecessors, but that just gives the album a resonance that was missing on Flood.

Good, but not worth $25 - Use eBay

Apollo 18 is a great album, and personally my favorite TMBG album, but I cannot believe the price. Sure, the Fingertips songs are funny, but not worth a dollar for ten seconds apiece. I got this album in very good condition for about $5 including shipping and handling, and I advise others do the same. You don't get it instantly, but saving $20 is worth another week and a half.

Arguably the best of TMBG.

I agree that this shouldn't be $25. In fact, if you HAVE to buy it here, buy it by song, but skip Fingertips. While a fun romp through many genres, it's lackluster. Now, the rest of album. The best stuff, ever. Dig My Grave starts with a calming tone, then fires into Flans screaming into the mic. I Palindrome I is Linnell's standard fare, and is one of his best works. She's Actual Size is akin to Whistling In The Dark (see Flood), and My Evil Twin and Mammal use few sounds, but are so catchy due to their lyrics. The Statue Got Me High is positively brilliant, Spider is fun and addictive, The Guitar is a quiet, groovy tune like Lie Still, Little Bottle (Lincoln), Dinner Bell is a showcase of Linnell's amazing lung capacity and melodic song writing, Narrow Your Eyes is again perfectly melodic, Hall of Heads is a creepy narrative (though hard to get into at first), Which Describes How You're Feeling on Apollo 18 is a very catchy version, completely different from the more powerful demo on Then. See the Constellation is a great rock track, If I Wasn't Shy is sung as it sounds it would be, Turn Around is much like Whistling as well (and as dark), and Hypnotist of Ladies is led by a chainsaw guitar and sung as if Flans is trying to hypnotize. Fingertips, as said, is an alright venue of the Johns' mastery of different genres, and the instrumental Space Suit is just beautiful. A must-own.

Actual size, it just seems bigger!

This album is actual size, but it seems much bigger to iTunes. 38 tracks, no matter how short they are. Seems foolish to allow an auto-price (obviously, or someone who knows nothing about TMBG) to kill a great album. Unless you have all the money, money couldn't buy... Go to Walmart.com and get it for 9.44, All 38 tracks.

Biography

Formed: 1983 in Boston, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Combining a knack for infectious melodies with a quirky, bizarre sense of humor and a vaguely avant-garde aesthetic borrowed from the New York post-punk underground, They Might Be Giants became one of the most unlikely alternative success stories of the late '80s and early '90s. Musically, John Flansburgh and John Linnell borrowed from everywhere, but their freewheeling eclecticism was enhanced by their arcane, geeky sense of humor. The duo would reference everything from British Invasion to Tin...
