My little brother is constantly recommending artists for me to check out. He almost always gets it right so I didn't hesitate when a link to Katie Herzig's new album landed in my inbox. Not only did he get it right, yet again, but he introduced me to what is sure to be one of my top 5 albums of 2009. From the opening of "Songbird," I was hooked. Her voice is sublime and the arrangements are just as fetching. Some favorites in addition to "Songbird" are the catchy "Forevermore" with a nod to the children's rhyme that goes "Say, say my playmate...," "Hologram," "How the West Was One," and the not-as-peppy-but-just-as-delightful "I Hurt Too." Apple Tree is just the breath of fresh air I needed after enduring so much pop music pollution.

Oh wow

This is so beautiful. I think im going to be obsessed, it reminds me of women a long time ago like Anne of Green Gables and like somehow when i listen to this im going to be transported there drinking tea and riding buggies. Im so tired right now and i feel like this music is a dream. Im going to show my friends :)

This is incredible.

I try to listen to a lot of music because I want to know what is out there that I am missing. I had a friend recommend Katie Herzig to me when I was making a mix CD of happy female songwriters. The first song of hers I listened to was "Jack and Jill" which is a knock-out. Not only was it great, I used it as the first song on the CD. So in my excitement I decided to listen to her latest stuff but didn't think she could match the high expectation I had in my mind. I was way wrong. Katie uses an incredible mix of her own warm and unique melodies to go with familiar melodies made her own. Every song is different, and if it is just plain Katie, she does something to make it unique and memorable. The only song I did not like was "I Will Follow." Every time I really listen to an album, I look for throw away songs that were just put on to make it longer and don't match the goodness of the better songs. There are usually 3 or 4 on any given album. I only thought there was 1 on this album. Every other song was either great or close to it. My favorite songs were "How the West Was Won," "Songbird," "I Hurt Too," and "Wish You Well." This is an incredible album and it went by way too fast. So I will have to listen to it MANY MORE TIMES!

Biography

Born: California

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Katie Herzig struck out on her own after eight years as the frontwoman for Newcomers Home. Herzig was no stranger to the solo game, having released her first solo album, Watch Them Fall, in 2004, so it was no surprise when, following the dissolution of Newcomers Home in 2006, Herzig put together a second album, Weightless, which was released that summer. Comprised of quirky, heartfelt songs that nodded to twangy, warm-voiced artists like Devon Sproule and Neko Case, the album generated quite a bit...
