Album Review

Few contemporary country artists deliver a live performance distinctively unique from the formulaic recordings processed by Music Row; one artist who does this is Radney Foster. Are You Ready for the Big Show? released on Dualtone Music Group, takes various live performances from September 21st and 22nd, 2000, at the Continental Club in Austin, TX, of Fosters' new material as well as his standards. The album captures the basic artistry of Radney Fosters' songwriting repertoire as well as a back-porch jam session featuring mandolin protégé Chris Thile (Nickel Creek), and Nashville's best kept secret, guitarist Mike McAdam (Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jack Ingram). For fans of Fosters' earlier solo work, Are You Ready for the Big Show? includes a Cajun rearrangement of "Just Call Me Lonesome" (Del Rio, Texas, 1959) and a slimmed-down acoustic version of "Nobody Wins" (Del Rio, Texas, 1959). The album's single is the unearthed Foster and Lloyd classic "Texas in 1880," unlisted as hidden track 16. On Are You Ready for the Big Show? Radney Foster returns full circle to his neo-traditionalist roots, which separated him from the droves of aspiring Nashville singer/songwriters early in his career.

One of the best ever!

For some reason there are no reviews of this cd yet...notice I say yet. I was introduced to this cd by a friend and I am a true believer. This guy has a way with words and melodies. This is one of the best cd's I have ever owned. There is such depth and emotion in this entire cd. I played this cd for about a year and recently had a good friend pass away. I will just say that I have listened to this cd alot more since then. There is so much feeling and emotion in this cd. He is truly a great musician. Keep doing what you are doing Radney.

Nashville ought to be ashamed....

that Radney Foster is not a household name. Another indictment of the hit makers in Nashville and the collusion of program directors in country music. This guy just writes great songs and performs them with incredible talent and soul. I bought this particular CD about 5 years ago and it still sounds as fresh as the day I first heard it and one of my favorite CD's (and I have over 600). Highlights for me are "Went For A Ride" which will give you goosebumps (listen to the intro), "I'm In" and a great version of "Nobody Wins".

Awesome Texas Alt-Country

Radney Foster is certainly one of the masters of the alt-country scene, and he shines in "Are You Ready for the Big Show?" Foster certainly makes country enjoyable to listen to again.
