Album Review

Are You Shakespearienced? could serve as the first official Trip Shakespeare album because its predecessor, Applehead Man, was a lo-fi affair without cohesion serving as more of a document of a new band learning how to play together. Here, Shakespeare has expanded into a quartet with the addition of Dan Wilson, and leader Matt Wilson has gained better control of his pen. Matt Wilson, at his most poetic, shines on "The Lake," a song which reports the events of two lovers sharing turmoil on the shore's edge as seen by the pike who lives in the lake. This song, along with the minimalist "Two Wheeler, Four Wheeler" and the brilliant unfolding of "Reception," foreshadowed the willowy lyrics Wilson was to master on the following Trip Shakespeare albums, while "Toolmaster of Brainerd," an opus about the Paul Bunyan of guitarists, represents the band's goofy side. Dan and Matt Wilson, and bassist John Munson really worked to hone the remarkable vocal harmonies which liberally peppered their later releases to great effect, making Are You Shakespearienced? a joy to listen to, although it is probably better if regarded as a prequel to the group's masterpieces Across the Universe and Lulu.

this is the best

Wow! What a blast!

We used to make it a ritual to see these guys whenever they played Gabe's Oasis in Iowa City. I've lived all over and seen a lot of bands, but these guys were about as much fun as you could have live... especially when they ripped into the ongoing saga of "Toolmaster of Brainerd." This album is their best. "Diane" made it onto many a mix tape, and "Swing" and "Two Wheeler, Four Wheeler" sound as fresh as they did back then. "Across the Universe" is another good one, with it's classic song "Snow Days." But if you only download one track from this LP, make it "Reception." These guys are great musicians and a lot of fun.

Good stuff, Better to come

Found this in the 1990 in college, as it was recommended to me by a Minneapolis native as good stuff to program into our rotation. 'Two Wheeler, Four Wheeler' and 'Thief' went into rotation. It hooked me! Excellent precursor to "Across The Universe" and "LuLu". Should have seen them live! Great show. Led to Semisonic...

Answering an ad for "wicked percussion hands," Harvard anthropology grad Elaine Harris hooked up with English major Matt Wilson, who would soon abandon school for music to relocate to his hometown of Minneapolis and found Trip Shakespeare, along with John Munson, a Chinese-language major at the University of Minnesota. After releasing a debut LP on Restless, Applehead Man, in 1988, the band expanded to include another Harvard student, Dan Wilson, a graduate student in art and Matt's elder brother....
