iTunes Review
Released in 1998, Are You Shpongled? may not be the first ambient trance album, but it is without question one of the finest examples of the genre, and it continues to serve as inspiration to other composers and producers. Complex, moving, and impossible to classify, the album features the considerable talents of Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen), who handles the synthesizer programming, and Raja Ram, who contributes thoughtful flute passages and clever arrangements of other wind instruments, especially those traditionally used in the Middle East. Beginning with the watery loops of “Shpongle Falls,” the album covers a wide range of textures and tones, from the gurgling bass lines of “Shpongle Spores” to the frenzied techno rhythms of “Vapour Rumours.” The album ends with the epic “And the Day Turned to Night,” a bold, densely layered reflection (inspired by a solar eclipse) that moves from gentle waves of sound to trippy dub to staccato rhythms over the course of 20 exhilarating minutes. What makes this track, along with the rest of the recording, consistently interesting is Shpongle’s emphasis on melody and pacing. Rather than allow the drum and bass parts to dominate, their music flows naturally and retains an organic feel often lacking in electronic music. This is a journey worth taking.
Customer Reviews
ridiculously excellent
The sounds made by these superb musical engineers is like none other. everyone i know who has heard of shpongle, likes them a lot. There is no other artist(s) out there that can match posford's and raja ram's music intelect.
Well Are You...?
This is not your typical electronic album. It is richly textured, luscious, and liquid in tone and timbre. Compellingly hypnotic. The motifs, rhythms and blend of electronic versus acoustic instrumentation all contribute to an album which truly conveys what the 90's term "trance" was striving for. It is not cacophonic or experimental, it doesn't challenge concepts of melody and harmony; instead it utilizes that which we feel most comfortable with and leads us on a transcendental journey through that territory. Set aside a special time to listen, download the entire album... ...and make sure you use it in the 'gapless' mode (not a 0 second gap, but 'gapless') The 16 bit CD and analogue LP sound even richer in tone. physicians note: may cause disorientation and avoid using heavy machinery until you are no longer shpongled.
21st century hippies.
These alien creatures were harmless when they were hopping and scurrying around in their dark pools of water in those underground tunnels. But then this tribal guru, Shpongle, comes along and gets them all hooked on drugs. Now all they want to do is party and dance. He better control those creatures or things could get out of hand. I think that's what those research observers were worried about. Stay tuned for more information.
