Strength in numbers

Of all of Ari Hoenig's groups over the years - trios with Kenny Werner, Jean-Michel Pilc or Orrin Evans, quartet or quintet settings with Jacques Schwarz-Bart or Chris Potter - this group, Punk Bop, exists as the most clear realization of Ari's artistic vision as both a composer and performer. The true strength of "Punk Bop" lies in Ari's sidemen (Jonathan Kreisberg, Will Vinson, Tigran Hamasyan, and Danton Boller), who, despite being conceptual arms of a greater beast, show the leader no quarter. Based on a library of common vocabulary and preset cues, the group is able to travel the breadth of rhythmic extremity, stretching polyrhythmic concepts to their breaking point without abandoning form for the sake of concept. 5 stars.

Best Live Show in NYC

If you've never seen this band live you are MISSING OUT. Every week, Ari PACKS Smalls and the energy in the place is through the roof! This album is the next best thing to actually being there. Check it out!

Great album BUT...

This is exactly the kind of jazz album I live for... Fantastic recording quality, excellent energy and interplay, inspired solos, and strong composition to hold it all together. I strongly recommend this CD, especially if you're familiar with these artists. They're in top form.

BUT...

The iTunes version has an skip/error on the first song at 3:28. Not a huge deal, but if you're paying ten bucks for an album you could just as easily download illegally, you'd at least expect a blemish-free copy! Hopefully this will be fixed or was merely a download error on my part.

Along the way, Hoenig has crossed paths with improvisers ranging from Philly soul-jazz organist/pianist Shirley Scott to saxman Joe Lovano to guitarist Mike Stern. Hoenig has played with the very straight-ahead and traditional Bucky Pizzarelli,...
