"Arise, Shine!" among the best
As far as new choral music goes, this should come at the top of everyone's list—listeners, performers, and composers alike. Dr. Forrest has a fresh, new outlook on both sacred and secular choral music, and his addition to the literature over the past decade has been astounding. I was among the first to be privileged enough to buy a copy of this album, and I recommend it with five stars to anyone who is looking for some fresh, new, satisfying choral music that glorifies the Lord in its quality and intent.
Fantastic Album!
I would highly recommend Dan's pieces!
Arise, Shine
Forrest could best be described as a New Tonalist; his style is at once highly accessible and, at times, slightly challenging, in a Lauridsen sort of way. Several of the works included on this album are pretty straightforward -- 'Arise, Shine!' premiered at Carnegie Hall and is presented here in the version with piano; the lullaby-type pieces ('Basque Lullaby', 'Good Night Dear Heart', 'Oread Farewell') flow perfectly naturally from note to note (one mark of a skilled composer) in a way few contemporary works do; and 'Where Go the Boats' is a simple yet effective setting of the Robert Louis Stevenson poem. Several of the pieces here, however, are a bit more daring; movements from the 'Words from Paradise' set won ASCAP's prestigious Morton Gould Young Composer Award, and sections of the 'Three Nocturnes' sound like Ligeti or Xenakis.
The BJU choirs here perform well under the direction of Warren Cook.
Overall, this is a highly effective album. Highly recommended.
