iTunes Review

With an unyielding Maya Tone drum machine deliberately stifling the rhythms, and a stubborn backing band intent on a desolate minimalism, Will Oldham assembled his lowest-key album to date. His poetry is often elusive, occasionally vulgar, but always in keeping with an ominous, creeping vibe that suggests the world is about to end in a whimper. His unorthodox vocals — Neil Young taken to the breaking point — yield an unusual emotional catharsis. "The Sunlight Highlights the Lack In Each" captures the aesthetic perfectly. The vocals clash with errant piano chords, a wah-wah guitar that sounds accidentally stumbled upon, and that half-dazed feeling when one is in twilight and unable to distinguish between dreams and reality. Oldham's songs are among his best. "Stablemate," "A Sucker's Evening," "No Gold Digger," and "Disorder" stand among his most haunted tales. He's drifting away from the mountain-folk and country leanings of his earlier work and discovering new, austere territory that's virtually without category, either intriguing or alienating the listener with its sense of mystery.

it'll take time...

i've had this record for about eight years now and i find myself needing to hear it with extreme regularity. it'll take time, though, for anyone new to will oldham. his voice lilts, breaks, whispers, shouts, chokes, and snarls (and he also makes animal noises sometimes). you'll thank yourself for the time you spend with it. will is amongst the brightest gems of american artists

Oldham's best

far and away my favorite Will Oldham (Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, etc) record. and David Grubbs' accompaniment on piano/organ is fantastic. if you're listening to clips, i recommend checking: the title track; "Weaker Soldier"; "Disorder"; and "Give Me Children".

You'll get it when you get it.

This is not an album that can just be picked up at a record store and enjoyed right off the bat. It is one that, like another reviewer on this page noted, takes some time to get into. It's not easy to get used to even if you're already a huge fan of Will's material like I was when I first heard it.

Yet if you allow this album to slowly grow on you, it is a near certainty that you'll have that "a-ha" moment. Musically, it's still not my favorite Will Oldham album - that title still belongs to Viva Last Blues - however, "Arise Therefore" contains what are clearly the best lyrics Will has ever written. And, like every album he's done, the closer is phenomenal. In fact, "The Weaker Soldier" is possibly one of the best closers I have ever heard on any album, period.

In two words: get this. Even if you don't "get it" right away, you will in time.

Biography

Born: December 24, 1970 in Louisville, KY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After his stints performing as Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and under his own name throughout the '90s, by the end of the decade Will Oldham seemed to finally settle on the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker as the main outlet for his work. Regardless of the name he used to release his music or the musicians supporting him, Oldham's style remained largely the same, pitting shambling and often sparse music against his creaky, world-weary voice and literate lyrics. The Louisville, Kentucky native...
