iTunes Review

Armchair Boogie is an absolute masterpiece. From the first song (a stunning version of his signature "Werewolf") to the album's closer (the lovely and strange instrumental "Penguins," which features fake trumpet playing at its best), Hurley was at an artistic peak on these 1970 bedroom recordings. The album sounds a bit like the Grateful Dead's classic American Beauty if it had been recorded at 4AM in a barn somewhere and if it guest-starred Willie Nelson, Dock Boggs and Leonard Cohen. Hurley has the vocal ease of Nelson as well as the ragged edge of pre-revival folkies like Boggs. And he's capable of writing lyrics as deep as anything Cohen ever wrote (though they're often a bit crude). The songs tend to alternate between folk crooners played solo or with minimal accompaniment and mid-paced rockers backed by a full band. The big question is why these basement tapes don't regularly show up on those lists of the best 100 albums of the rock era, or even the 50 best records you've never heard. It's partly because the artist himself is so reclusive and wary of the spotlight, while the fact that the material's been unavailable for years can't help. Regardless, Armchair Boogie simply reeks of homespun beauty.

Customer Reviews

You can see by the way she wash them clothes....

...her cookin' must be fine. You just don't get lyrics like that from songwriters who are only in it for the money. I got this album originally in vinyl from my old college roommate. He bought it because he thought the album artwork was cool...which it is, but he hated the music. I, on the other hand, I fell deeply in love with it and it has been one of my favorites since that day in 1971. Some people get....some people don't. My 20 year old son get's it. He called it the most honest music he's ever heard. Technology zoomed past my vinyl and cassette recordings of Armchair Boogie but thanks to iTunes I can listen Sweedeedeee and the Werewolf and ride on the Grand Canyon Line anytime I want.

Perfect

This is my favorite album of all time. Michael Hurley is a genius.

Amazing Album

It is too bad the itunes store will not record this album on a cassette and slip it in your car's cassette deck. This album will make you feel good on a rainy day, if you are stuck in traffic and late for work you may just pull over and smile. Check out Be Kind to Me, Sweedeedee, Biscuit roller, and Grand Canyon Line.
