iTunes Review

R.E.M. once suggested they would not continue as a group if one of its original members decided to quit. Health concerns and other passions led drummer Bill Berry to leave his drummer seat, but the remaining members sought to fulfill their musical destiny with quieter results. They’d never been a particularly loud or heavy rock band, so the shift towards reflective ballads and songs longer on texture than groove doesn’t sound like anything more than an older band maturing into its advanced, wiser ways. R.E.M. rarely composed with grand concepts in mind. The band’s strength has been the small, illuminating moment where the instruments coalesce into a dream-like weave as they do here as the title track sweetly resolves. “The Outsiders,” with a guest spot from rapper Q-Tip, adds a touch of syncopated rhythm, however, it’s the hazy shuffle of “Leaving New York,” the piano-led “Make It All OK” and the mild pop shimmer of “Aftermath” and “Wander Lust” that represent the band’s usual abilities if not the full strength of its usual inspirations.

Stop comparing new R.E.M. to old R.E.M., they're 2 completely different bands

Many fans diss the new R.E.M. albums because they "aren't as good as the old stuff". But let's face the facts - R.E.M. will never make another album as good as Reckoning or Life's Rich Pageant. This is because you simply can't top true greatness. So give the band a break - their new stuff may not be as good as their old stuff, but it's still much better than most of the stuff on the charts today. With that in mind, I have to admit that Around the Sun is still one of R.E.M.'s worst efforts so far - in fact, it's probably their worst album ever. However, this is R.E.M. we're talking about, which means it is still good, just not as good as previous efforts. There are still several very good songs on this album, including "Leaving New York", "Electron Blue", "The Outsiders", "Final Straw", "Aftermath", and the title track. The rest, however, is mostly just filler. There are really no "hidden gems" on this album, which means it is one of the few albums I would not reccomend in it's entirety to all but the most hardcore of R.E.M. fans. (Which I consider myself a part of.) Practically every other R.E.M. album has hidden gems, songs that weren't hits and didn't get much airplay, but are just as good or better than songs that were hits and did get airplay. The hidden gems were what made R.E.M. albums special - there was really no such thing as "filler" on old R.E.M. albums. So what happens when there is an R.E.M. album with no hidden gems and lots of filler? You get a subpar R.E.M. album. Again, that doesn't make it a bad album, just somewhat of a dissapointment. However, R.E.M. did redeem themselves on their next effort, 2008's Accelerate, which was a very good album with lots of good songs and a couple of hidden gems and very little filler. I reccomend Accelerate much higher than Around the Sun. In fact, Accelerate is one of their best albums since Bill Berry left the band in 1997!

REM has still got it!

This may be a mellow album but the songs on it are beautiful. Some of their best work. Very underrated.

Best of their albums

This is a wonderful album. I first heard REM at the age of six, and went to their concert when they were touring this album. Aftermath is my fave song. Please buy it, or at least say yes. I love this album.

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought...
