iTunes Review
The return of Randy Travis to secular country music has to be considered a bona fide event. Yet part of the charm of Around the Bend, the singer’s first non-gospel album in nine years, is its deliberately low-key quality. Producer Kyle Lehning harkens back to his work with Travis two decades ago for inspiration, then strips away extraneous pop elements (except for strings) to reveal the traditional structures beneath. Travis retains the endearing vocal mannerisms of his early records — the pinched highs and grumbling lows are all here. What’s added is a sense of wisdom and forgiveness in his delivery, as well as greater comic timing. (Check out his rendering of the droll “Everything That I Own (Has Got a Dent)” for proof.) Travis’ deeply-held Christian beliefs lend a patina of spiritual love to good-humored tunes like “Every Head Bowed” and “From Your Knees” as well as reverent ballads like “Faith in You.” The album’s sound is crisp and uncluttered, with song like “Turn it Around” and the title tune ambling along to sparkling acoustic guitars. Around the Bend is a quietly masterful work by an artist who has made the transition from young hunk into gentlemanly sage.
Customer Reviews
Don't Think Twice, It's Better Than All Right
Randy Travis has such a warm and inviting voice, and this song selection suits him well. Outside of Dylan himself, of all the many covers of "Don't Think Twice," this may turn out to be my favorite. Done with a bluegrass feel the instrumentation (arrangement) and the execution (timing, etc.) are excellent. This CD is reminiscent of the best of his early work
Reflective; philosophical as well as fun
This album is reflective. It has just as many serious moments as it does it's twangy C&W flair. If you only buy one single buy "Faith in You". It speaks volumes about our times w/o being preachy. "From Your Knees" is that way, too. There is definitely a strong singer/songwriter element that has always been a part of Randy Travis' music. I enjoy his philisophical outlook.
Randy is a Classic!
Randy Travis has always been the real deal when it comes to country music about the love of your life, a lost love, broken heart, or just living life. I have always sung along with Randy for years, and this is another excellent collection of traditional country music to sing along with. I'm so glad to see Randy with another country album.
