Album Review

With electric guitarist Andy Powell sitting in on the title track, Renaissance delivered its best, and first fully formed album, mixing Russian, French, and Indian influences in musical settings that are both lively and elegant. The title track is one of the few lengthy progressive-rock pieces of the era that holds up, and the rest of the material runs the gamut from folk ("Carpet of the Sun") to Impressionist ("At the Harbor"), all of it hauntingly beautiful and enlivening. Reissued in 1993 by One Way Records, with excellent sound.

Ashes Are Burning

Great album. Annie Haslam is one of the best singers of all time.

Ashes Are Burning

This is one of the albums that defined Prog Rock. For those of us that grew up in the 70s, there is probably none better (for the Prog Rock genre, that is.)

Progressive Rock at its best!

Ashes are Burning is one of my all time favorite albums. Great classically influenced piano by John Tout. Powerful bass guitar by Jon Camp. And, of course, the remarkable vocals of Annie Haslam. Epic masterpieces like the title cut and Can You Understand. Catchy and upbeat Carpet of the Sun. I can't recommend this album more highly!
