iTunes Review
Granted, in Asher Roth’s DNA there are traces of white rappers past — one can hear the lackadaisical flow of early Beck crossbred with Paul Barman’s Caucasian annunciation and Eminem’s mischievous punchlines — but in the end Asleep In the Bread Aisle has less to do with hip-hop than it initially appears. Despite the presence of club beats like “She Don’t Wanna Man,” Roth’s major-label debut is a laid-back, feel-good affair — the kind of music that would fit in easily between Ben Harper and Sublime in a dorm party playlist. The collage-like sounds are reminiscent of Beck’s Mellow Gold and Odelay, but Roth is nowhere near as much of an art school eccentric. If anything, his style seems to update the ideas of Nineties bands like Cake and the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, although Cee-Lo’s presence here is a quick reminder of Roth’s affinity for Gnarls Barkley. So what if Asher Roth is not the new Eminem, and is instead just making party tunes for his likeminded collegiate peers? He hosts a good party, and is right at home as the highly-quotable master of ceremonies.
Customer Reviews
Manufactured frat boy blaah
I shouldn't have even listened to the whole thing; my impression based on "College" and "Lark on My Go-Kart" was dead on - a popular-ish, good looking white dude who can combine words together somewhat fluidly, who has absolutely nothing interesting or innovative to say. This is manufactured frat boy crap. I don't think Nas was right when he proclaimed "Hip-Hop is Dead" (pick up the new Mr. Lif, the new Finale, anything from Black Milk), but THIS ALBUM and THIS STYLE OF "HIP-HOP" is like hearing death bells and watching the movie Idiocracy at the same time. It doesn't matter that he's white - Esoteric, Jedi Mind Tricks, Edan - these guys are white, too, but at least they're pushing things forward. This guy is a product, plain and simple. He likes weed (who doesn't?) He looks like he could be on Gossip Girl (girls like him) He shouts out Jay-Z in every interview (smart move) On the surface, he's close enough to Eminem to command attention, but this guy is no Eminem circa Slim Shady/Marshall Mathers. I get it why this guy's popular, and I give him credit. He's a fantastic self-marketer and for that he deserves his props. But this album, this style of "hip-hop" is the equivelant of taking a bong hit and eating a bag of cheetohs. If that's all you want from your hip-hop, cool...I just prefer my hip-hop with a little more subtance...with or without the bong rip.
Asleep In the Bread Isle
This album is great. He has his own style and the dude got some swagger. The album in my opinion is 4.5/5 because he's a really awesome lyricist and sadly enough, one of the best ones that are still left. To me this better than the stuff that's out today like Soulja Boy. Agree? Yes or No
NOT REAL HIP HOP!
Somewhere 2Pac, Biggie, Jam Master Jay, and all the others that laid the framework for hip hop are rolling in their graves. Another dumbed down, commercial, and trashy album that has people thinking that it's a hip-hop classic. This is not HIP HOP. If this blue-collared punk loved college so much he shoulda stayed in it, and not dropped out so he could tell the world about his parties.
