iTunes Review

With Astro Coast, South Florida’s Surfer Blood have officially ushered in the ‘90s indie-rock revival. Pulling from Pavement’s all-American boyish quirkiness and Sebadoh’s penchant for low fidelity production and boutique distortion pedals, they also inject an adoration of surf music into their tones. Anyone familiar with Beachwood Sparks’ musical family tree will hear hints of Further influencing the dirty warmth of awesome opener “Floating Vibes.” The Shinsesque “Swim” rocks with oceans of reverb and angular instrumental arrangements, while the muted guitar arpeggios on “Take It Easy” are a cool nod to Bob Bogle from the Ventures. Named after one of the best reverb pedal manufacturers, “Harmonix” is a more relaxed outing with walls of sound à la My Bloody Valentine and tastefully catchy melodies that would sit perfectly on a mix alongside any song from the Tyde). Where bands like Phantom Surfers and the Surf Punks embraced a “beat it, kook” attitude, it’s a welcome change to hear a more inviting and optimistic take on surf themes, especially in the uplifting “Fast Jabroni.”

Brilliant

Imagine weezer and vampire weekend listened to beach boys records for hours straight then recorded a record together. This is what you would get. It's absolutley brilliant. So far my favorite record of 2010 by a mile

Its good.....but

Its good...but the only thing about it is that i can name specific songs from specific artists that sound almost exactly, if not exactly the same as all of these song. Theyre all good songs but theyve all been done before and practically the same exact way. If weezer and silversun pickups and some indie rock alt pop kinda bands all had sex this band would emerge from some kind of giant rock bandgina. I like it...but its nothing new. Wont change the world. Wont inspire to create. Still give it a listen though.

hmmm... questions...

I find it interesting that, for the most part, iTunes customer reviews tend to be either 5 or 1 stars with very little to none that give a 2,3, or 4 star rating. I don't believe an album should be given 5 stars unless, it is truly legendary, unique, and inspiring. Neither should an album receive one star unless it absolutely tortures you and puts you through extreme irritation while listening. So the questions are... will this new hyped up indie rock band live up to its hype? Will it completely change the way independent is heard by listeners? My answer to both those questions is a simple no. There were some great tracks on this album (Swim, Floating Vibes), but does a few stand out tracks make this album worthy of a legendary 5 star rating? NO. This album is far from revolutionary but still worth listening to. I didnt hate the album, I just found some of the songs average while others were good. I give this 3 out of 5. keep in mind that a 3 is high average for me and that I have only really given perfect 5's on a handful of albums (OK Computer, Moon and Antarctica, Yoshimi battles Pink Robots..).

Though South Florida doesn't have the tides to shoot the curl, West Palm Beach's Surfer Blood fuse sunny surf rock charm with indie rock cool. Guitarist/vocalist John Paul Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz had known each other since high school; they started playing together and connected with guitarist Thomas Fekete, bassist Brian Black, and percussionist Marcos Marchesani at an Ultra Music Festival after-party, officially becoming Surfer Blood in spring 2009. They began recording and touring almost...
