Album Review
Based on their infectious summer single "Walking on the Sun," it was easy to dismiss Smash Mouth as a one-hit wonder, since it was hard to believe that they'd be able to top that sun-kissed delight that was easily the highlight of their debut, Fush Yu Mang. Perhaps that's why their second record, Astro Lounge, feels like such a surprise, since it carries through on the promise of "Walking on the Sun." Like Sugar Ray — a fellow veteran of the ska-punk underworld who delivered a follow-up that owed more to melodic pop and new wave than its hit predecessor — Smash Mouth have created an album that is unabashedly fun, catchy, and lightweight, the ideal music for a car radio or a day at the beach. It's true that nothing on Astro Lounge is as immediately grabbing as "Walking on the Sun," but every song shares the same party-ready mentality and irresistible, trashy AM-radio vibe. No, nothing on Astro Lounge is particularly deep, but it's all good fun and it never disappoints — which is quite a remarkable feat, since one-hit wonders rarely deliver a second album that betters their first.

Hidden Gems
This has some great songs, like "All Star" and "Come On, Come On", but there are many tracks that are just as good that are not as well known. "Radio" is an awsome song, as is "Who's There" and "Defeat You"; they just never made it to the radio charts. I deeply suggest trying these out.
One of the best albums ever.
I think that "Astro Lounge" should be in Rolling Stone's top 500 albums ever. This is much better than "Fush Yu Mang", which had many songs that sounded similar to each other. This is a very diverse album, though I would classify the genre as alternative, and not ska. You can definitely hear ska influences on "Road Man", and a few other songs, but not enough to actually classify it as ska. Overall, this is a great album, and the best songs are "All Star", "Stoned", and "Home".
Very Solid
This album came right in between Smash Mouth's punky-pop roots which, though catchy and energetic, lacked depth, and their more recent glitzy pop dreck. Say what you will about Smash Mouth, but the truth is, Greg Camp's songwriting on Astro Lounge is his best (some examples: Radio, Home, Then The Morning Comes, and especially Defeat You), making this one of the most solid alternative albums of the 90s. (If I could give this a 4.5, I would.)
