Album Review
A greatly matured Thomas Dolby highlights his melodic tendencies on Astronauts & Heretics. Containing more personal moments enhanced by his love for technology, such tracks as "Cruel," which features a stunning Eddi Reader, and "Eastern Bloc (the sequel)" help listeners connect with bits of the past forwarded into the future. "Eastern Bloc (the sequel)" even takes its rhythmic sense from the old Johnny Otis tune, "Willie and the Hand Jive," before it comes into its own. "Silk Pajamas" has a unique pastiche of sound to it and also a very memorable tune to go along. While nothing here appeared to catch fire with the public at the time, Astronauts & Heretics is still a fine testament to Dolby's continuing maturity. Time sometimes must catch up to foresighted performers. Astronauts & Heretics is just such a case.
Customer Reviews
his best work, yet all of it is pretty good
This was a great album to wrap up his career (I'm not counting the minds eye soundtrack, which was a soundtrack)
If you are a fan of his 80's hit 'Blinded me with Science' (From his first album: The Golden Age of Wireless) I think you'll like this album, while at the same time appreciate the higher sound quality. (His first album was great too, but it has the sonic quality of an average late 70's recording. His second album, the flat earth, was a sonic masterpiece - so much so that you'd almost really need a fancy stereo to fully enjoy it. His 3rd album (Aliens ate my Buick) was highly enjoyable, sounded great on a great stereo, but was equally at home in a car stereo or headphones, much like this, his 4th album that's being reviewed here.
While there are a handful of good songs on this album, one of my favorites has to be Cruel - I have no idea who sung it with him, but she's fantastic, the sonic quality of the song is great too - Turn off your lights and give it a listen.
must listen
gotta check this one out = screaming eddie van halen gittar on eastern block, and a great jerry garcia passage on beauty of a dream
Dolby at his best
This is a wonderful compilation of Thomas Dolby's music. Unlike earlier CDs, y
This is less techno and more adventurous. Melodies entertwine with interesting percussion themes. His lyrics tell interesting stories and reveal the humor that is usually present in his work. Strong recommendation to BUY!!!
