Customer Reviews
What you need to know about Chicago's live material on iTunes....!
Those looking for Chicago’s live work should beware. “Chicago Beginnings,” “Chicago in Concert,” “Chicago Live,” and “Rock in Toronto–Chicago” are all the same album, a somewhat primitive, grainy Chicago concert recorded around the time of Chicago’s second album, in the late 1960s. The performances are cool. The album has been released under countless names with countless album covers, and I’m surprised iTunes has let FOUR of these things on here. Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall is a great album, recorded between Chicago III and Chicago V, in the very early 1970s. The mix features a lot of Hendix-like guitar and loud, sloppy horns and vocals. I love it. Live in Japan was recorded after Chicago V. The tracklist and arrangements are similar to the Carnegie Hall concert, but this recording is preferred over the Carnegie concert by the band. I prefer the Carnegie mix and performances, myself, but the Chicago V tracks are great to hear live. Chicago did not make another live album until Chicago 26. That features the current lineup of the band and mixes hits from the 60s and 70s, a few rare tracks, and a few of the 1980s power ballads, along with a few newly recorded songs that are somewhat unremarkable. The album is somewhat rare, so it’s great you can download it on iTunes. It’s well worth having, and might be a good introduction to the band.
Amazing even now.
This album will always be a desert island disk, it never left my turn table for almost 6 months after it's first release.
sing a mean tune
I was at the concert on opening night (5 nights) and it was the best live performance I've ever heard. The band had reached their apogee and their horns were so good to be mind boggling. The piano solos perfect and moody. The vocals especially with Terry Kath and his guitar were as good as it gets. This was a great band at it's best.
