Once a young ambitious musician and producer known for his quick, instinctive style (hence his nickname “The Basher”), in recent years British rocker Nick Lowe has settled into his role as a dignified, aging singer-songwriter who keeps the spirit of country, soul and ‘50’s-‘60’s styled pop alive with matter-of-fact reflections on a human nature that’s less than perfect. Lowe delivers his lyrics with a crisp, unpretentious croon that softens his tunes’ inherent cynicism. He recalls the professional country purrings of Ray Price with his own “A Better Man” where he states at the opening, “In my life I’ve done things I’m not proud of” over a sparse, tasteful backing group. R&B horns compliment the cool evening sway of the Stax-influenced “Hope For Us All” and add a desolate edge to “Love’s Got A Lot To Answer For.” “People Change,” with a hint of Chrissie Hynde on backing vocals, lightheartedly acknowledges the unpredictable whims of love. Lowe’s found the unlikely balance of aging gracefully without losing the spring in his step.

Smooth like buttah...

Hooray! I am a long-time fan of Nick's, but I'm a critical listener -- this really is good stuff. Listen to some clips and judge for yourself. Nick is very self-aware, and his gifts for storytelling and turning a phrase have diminished not at all since his early days as a founder of pub rock, new wave, etc. (See the excellent book, No Sleep 'Til Canvey Island, for more on that topic.) Make no mistake, though: it's mellow. For me, I enjoyed listening to Nick toy with different vocal styles, like capturing a bit of swing on "Feel Again." "I Trained Her..." is a stand-out for me, as is "The Club." I'm not sure I love some of the arrangements -- I think he played it safe, and I wish there'd been more musical/production exploration in evidence. So some of it is less engaging than it could be. That's my only complaint. Thank you, Nick, and please don't make us wait another 6 years for the next studio release!

If all was right in the world...

...this album would be at the top of both the pop and country charts! Mr. Lowe has only gotten better with age. Classic arrangements with lyrics full of sharp wit. Raise your musical IQ and download this disc!

It's a winner!

I love this album. I've been a fan of Nick Lowe's since the early 80's and this work is completely consistant with the cleverness and quality he delivered back then. That voice! It could only be Nick Lowe. What a joy to hear it again.
