Album Review
The orchestral gothic metal of Morten Veland's Sirenia is more than ambitious on the group's debut, At Sixes and Sevens — it's almost cosmic in scope and epic by any standard. After carefully honing his skills in the more collaborative Tristania, Veland holds nothing back on this 2002 Napalm offering. A cadre of operatic vocalists and classical musicians wrap Veland's songs in a composite sheen that's rare even within a genre known for grand soundscapes. A few plodding numbers (the title track and "Lethargica") miss their mark, but when highlights like the anthemic "Shadow of Your Own Self" get into gear, At Sixes and Sevens rolls like thunder and flows like the bitter tears of Veland's less-accomplished goth/doom colleagues.

Best Sirenia album by Far
This is my favorite Sirenia album, as well as gothic metal album. It blends not only brutality, but a sort of subtle gentleness and darkness. It's the sort of music that comes with darkness, love, hate, and mystery. It's true music of the nightfall. It blends choirs, death growls, soft female vocals, and rich lyrics in a whole gothic metal explosion. It seems that it starts out with outstanding epicness in "Meridian", to nostalgic beauty, softness, and hopelessness in "In Sumerian Haze." The tracks that stand out most to me are the folky beats of "Sister Nightfall", the great opener, "Meridian," The mysterious spooky "On The Wane", and the great dark brutality of "At Sixes and Sevens." But the best track for me is the soft and subtle, "In Sumerian Haze." It's filled with such love, simplicity, delicacy, emotion, and a sense of foreboding hopelessness that tears you apart with its little lyrics, soft female vocals, acoustic guitar and violin. It all leads down to this song, and it's by the far the best way to end this gothic metal explosion masterpiece.
Why didn't I hear about them before?
This is an awesome album! "On the Wane" is the most amazing song I have ever heard! Who can argue with a violin solo?
a masterpiece
An awesome album. Its hard to pick favorites but In a Manica, Manic Aeon are high on the list. I hope he returns back to this style, its better in my opinion.
