Album Review

The Canal Street that John Boutté is referring to in this album's title isn't the one that runs through Lower Manhattan — it is the Canal Street of New Orleans, where he grew up. Boutté is not an easy singer to categorize; parts of this superb CD (which was recorded in 1998 and released in 2001) are pure Crescent City soul, but other parts of it are vocal jazz or African-American gospel. Boutté, whose influences range from Sam Cooke and Aaron Neville to Little Jimmy Scott, is a convincing soul singer on "Sisters," the title song, and Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." But he is equally believable — and equally expressive — as a torchy jazz singer on "The Masquerade Is Over," the Gershwin standard "Someone to Watch Over Me," and Luiz Bonfa's "Manha de Carnaval" (which is listed as "Black Orpheus" in the credits and is also known as "A Day in the Life of a Fool"). Meanwhile, Boutté favors African-American gospel (as opposed to white country-gospel or modern Christian R&B) on "Didn't It Rain" and "Just a Little While to Stay Here." As unpredictable as this album is, Boutté never comes across as unfocused or confused. Boutté genuinely appreciates a variety of music, and his eclectic nature serves him well on this impressive, consistently rewarding CD.

Customer Reviews

If you think this is good...

then you should check him out live in his home city of New Orleans! This guy has it all... he has an incredible voice, great phrasing, an honest vocal feel... I mean, he he is what modern day jazz/blues is all about. This is an earlier work of his and it shows many sides of his vocal personality. I encourage anyone who is intrigued by this work to try out some of his more recent offerings. His tone has matured and his live performances are filled with an emotional delivery that is hard to describe. This guy is a true artist. I encourage all lovers of this genre to indulge themselves. Then get on a plane and pay a visit to New Orleans and check out John in a live performance or two!

John Boutte earned a business degree in college, but his heart always turned toward music. He'd watched his sister, Lillian Boutte, star in a musical theater production of One Mo' Time before she left their hometown of New Orleans to make a career in music for herself in Europe. But despite his own love of music, he took a job with a credit union after serving four years in the U.S. Army. It wasn't until he met Stevie Wonder and the superstar told him he had a definite shot at making it as a singer,...
