iTunes Review

Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings make the transition from one-man studio project to full-fledged rock group on the ferocious and exhilarating Attack on Memory. In the process, leader Dylan Baldi and his bandmates manage to cross Nirvana’s volcanic angst with Sonic Youth’s abrasive minimalism as they churn their way through this bracing set. Baldi confronts the nihilism coursing through his lyrics with a bratty sort of defiance—his raw-throated vocals mix torment with perverse delight. Bashing drums and howling guitars pound home the raging frustration within “No Sentiment,” “Our Plans," and “Stay Useless.” “Wasted Days” is an eight-minute explosion of merciless throb and thrash worthy of The Velvet Underground. Behind these tunes' lethal thrust is a surprising grasp of song structure and dynamics, lifting the music beyond routine punk spew into something more rarified. Legendary producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Pixies) does a superlative job at documenting Cloud Nothings’ live sound in the studio.

it's good. like old b. joe armstrong meets kurt cobain meets thom yorke. it's got a progressive vibe amidst lots of grundge.. nice change.. uncharted, unconventional territory.

perfect fodder for pitchfork/hispters/good-music lovers.

this once-whispy cirrus is developing into a mighty, billowing cumulonimbus. mmm

Do it.

Strays away from the indie-pop-punk vibe of Cloud Nothings' earlier albums into a little bit of a '90s post-punk sound. Could be attributed to Albini's hand in the production process of this album. The use of a full band on this album really produces a more full, enriched and active sound. A bit different (just as Turning On and the self-titled differed), and more raw than previous efforts, but still catchy as all hell (in a fantastic way).

incredibly amazing!

Get it NOW!!! (said like arnold schwarzeneggar)

The sunny, raw sounds of Cloud Nothings come from an enigmatic Clevelander named Dylan, who formerly made music under the name of Cat Killer. Like many lo-fi artists of the late 2000s (particularly Wavves, Women, and Neon Tongues), Dylan took interest in reviving cassette culture, releasing his singles on tape and embracing a maxed-out recording technique in his blissful music. Cloud Nothings’ eight-song debut, Turn It On, was released in a limited run of 50 CDs and 100 cassettes in 2009. Those...
