Album Review

Creators of some of the most intricately and expertly woven indie rock of the 2000s, Pinback don't disappoint with their fourth record, Autumn of the Seraphs. As twin cogs Zach Smith and Rob Crow have matured, they've grown from (slightly) meandering mopes to expert constructors of songs that reveal hidden layers with nearly every listen. Acolytes of the Police, the group channel their energy into a fluid dynamic of songwriting, performance, and production. "From Nothing to Nowhere" is a driving opener, but from there Pinback go in unexpected directions. Early highlights "Barnes" and "Good to Sea" twist a recipe of individual ingredients — wistful harmonies, plangent basslines, spidery guitars, and wry lyrics ("it's good to see you...it's good to see you go") — into an excellent dish. Aside from their own majority contributions, the duo get help from a pair of drummers — Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Sea of Tombs) and Chris Prescott (No Knife) — and use programmed beats on several tracks. The effect is a good one, since Pinback have always relied on the precision of their arrangements and their wintry sound to carry the effect of their dour songs.

Customer Reviews

So excited for this release!

This album is everything I had hoped. Smart melodies, fantastic production, and an overall upbeat and crisp sound. This band is maturing before everyone's ears! Can't wait to see them live in Atlanta this October! I recommend: From Nothing..., Good to Sea, Walters, and Blue Harvest for starters. Pinback has been a favorite of mine for some years now. Every song will eventually tackle your musical tastebuds until you cannot skip a track. Enjoy people. And thank this band for creating beauty in all the crap that's out there.

Very Nice

Quintessential Pinback - gets the toes tapping with unique Pinback grooves and beautiful melodies. Pinback fans and new listeners will love this album (new listeners also try Summer in Abaddon). Standouts - Good to Sea, Walters, Blue Harvest, Bouquet, The Hatenaughts of Melancholy Wall.

Incredible

This album has been in my car for at least 3 weeks, or ever since I picked it up. It is absolutely amazing. I listen to it whenever I go anywhere and I'm not sick of it and I don't think I ever will be. Pinback in this album excels in it's layers of simplicity. There is always something to listen to and to find even when you think it gets boring. Top songs for this album are "Boquet" (my insides melt everytime I hear it; it's like an out of body experiece), "How We Breathe", "Good to Sea", and "Devil You Know." Other really good songs are "Barnes", "Subbing for Eden", "Blue Harvest", and "Off By 50." The others are still very good, but I usually end up skipping them because I have a craving to listen to other ones first. There really are no words to describe these. Don't be fooled into thinking these are boring by the 30 second samples. The more you listen to it, the more you fall in love with it. Best money I've spent on music in a really long time.

While a rotating cast of instrumentalists find loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of the some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Armistead Burwell Smith IV (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. The simple plan grew more involved while Three Mile Pilot...
