Album Review

Director was Avant's first number one R&B album — though it has to be noted that his three previous albums went Top Ten — yet the singer's fifth album bears the Capitol logo, the first time he has not fallen under Universal's distribution network. On Avant, he goes both harder and softer. The uptick in salaciousness could be detected in the album's lead single, slow jam "Break Ya Back" — a long way from "Read Your Mind," what with its winking hook of "Baby it's a fact, when we get up in the sack, I'm gonna break your back...in a good way." It can also be heard in album lowlight "Out of Character," where he tells his woman she "needs to go both ways." Those two songs are offset by a faithful and charming cover of the biggest yacht rock song of all time, Christopher Cross' "Sailing." In between those two poles is a typical Avant album, no bad thing. The album, in fact, contains the best opening three-song sequence of his career. On "Sensuality," he doesn't allow thick synthesizer colorings to get in the way of a good song; "Perfect Gentleman" strikes a balance between elegant lift and rhythmic punch; and "Involve Yourself," with its chunky and melodic bassline, could easily switch into a cover of Groove Theory's mid-'90s classic "Tell Me."

Another Winner.....

I loved Avant's last album "The Director", and I was curious to see how he would step it up on this project. I am pleasantly surprised once again, Avant has been consistently stepping his game up with each release. Make no mistake that "The Director" was the best album thus far, however, this album certainly is not a step backwards. Instead it kinda show's another side that "The Director" perhap's did not explore. This album is not as energetic and sexy as "The Director", but in contrast, more low-key, mellow and sensuous. Avant sounds more relaxed and I love the fact that his songs, usually don't have that over-produced sound. He could have followed the sound that most mainstream artists are using these days, but like Jon. B., I am so glad he is comfortable not following the trends to the letter and always anchors his projects with his signature sound. If nothing else, you can always count on Avant's stellar ability to bring his emotions to the surface in every song, he makes you believe, his delivery is very sincere....like the singer's back in the 50's and 60's, that would really pour their feelings into their songs. Also, you can count on great sound production, and solid lyrics and/or songwriting skills. This is why I will NOT buy this album boot leg, but will fully support Avant, because he deserves my hard earned money. Lastly, I am a big Christopher Cross fan and own three Christopher Cross albums to prove it and I am a firm believer of, if you can't do the song better or bring something different to the table, then don't cover a song by another artist. The 30 second snippet didn't really allow me to hear the song "Sailing" fully, but from what I heard, this may have not been the best song for Avant to cover. However, the song itself is a beautiful song that brings wonderful memories to me of spending weekends hanging out with my dad in Marina Del Rey, Californina......I hope that after buying the album and hearing the song from start to finish, Avant does it good justice. If not, it was nice thought:-) Overall, in my opinion, it's a solid album, better than Musiq's and I will promptly scoop it up tomorrow. Great Job Avant !

Avant-Avant

Avant’s fifth release features a new label and re-introduction with the self-titling of the album. Having struck gold on each of his releases, does he continue his streak?

Sensuality: Twinkling notes and synth loops start things off, as Avant glazes the track nicely. Sincere and clear vocals work as signature Avant sound with the decent production, that starts the album off on a good note. 3/5
Perfect Gentleman: The Trackmasters craft a beautiful production that suites Avant well, allowing his smooth vocals to soar on top. Smooth and sweet, it’s a good track. 3.5/5
Involve Yourself: With a bassline groove, horns and light piano keys, the track is classy, yet danceable. Solid dance number that serves a smooth light vibe to it. 3.5/5
When It Hurts: One of the two singles released, lovely piano production from the Underdogs builds well for Avant. His likeable personality and sincere sound work as an enjoyable love joint. 4/5
Out Of Character: Decent production that fits in with the previous numbers, the track is a bit too raunchy. Like the title states, it’s “out of character” for Avant and is a misstep on the album. 2.5/5
Material Things: Dontae Winslow handles the triumphant horns and uptempo vibe. The hook really shines, while Avant croons about the various material things he has in his life, however they don’t mean a thing to him if he lost his lady. One of the better tracks on the album. 3.5/5
French Pedicure: Mediocre production from Dontae Winslow, as Avant gets a bit dull here. The track isn’t bad, it just isn’t as memorable as you’d like. Nonetheless a decent number. 3/5
Attention: Bass thumps with snaps, yet it isn’t related to the Atlanta snap sound. Rather, its a clubby midtempo with slightly altered hook vocals and a Snoop Dogg feature. Decent club joint, but earlier tracks fit Avant better. 2.5/5
Break Ya Back (In A Good Way): Anxious and sick of patiently waiting, Avant bursts out here with a repetitive synth loop, as he states “I’m gonna break your back....in a good way”. It’s Avant at his most raunchiness, similar to “Out Of Character”, except sounds better. 3/5
Y.O.U.: Decent track here that has spacey and dreamy production from Antonio Dixon & Eric Dawkins. Avant works well here, allowing his loveable croon swoon the ladies, however the electronic “yoooooouuu” gets a bit tiresome. 3.5/5
Sailing: A remake of Christopher Cross’ classic “Sailing”, Avant doesn’t do it any better or worse, merely its a solid remake. Avant fits the track well and it sounds nice. 3.5/5

While he hasn’t been this raunchy before, merely hinted at it on earlier albums, Avant still crafts a worthy album. Kept at a tight 12 track tracklist, Avant navigates through the album at more of a danceable pace, but things considerably slow down in the latter half. The excellent four song start works well, “Sensuality”, “Perfect Gentleman”, “Involve Yourself” and “When It Hurts” all are solid Avant cuts that have danceable beats, until the relationship number “When It Hurts”. Things however run into a misstep of “Out Of Character” which has Avant needing his girl to “go both ways” and later the merely mediocre “Attention” with Snoop Dogg, fails to impress. The giltzy and fun filled “Material Things” comes off true and sincere, while the dim lit “French Pedicure” and “Break Ya Back (In A Good Way)” serve as bedroom numbers that express Avant’s raunchiness. Things finish off with a Christopher Cross remake of his hit “Sailing” and the ballad, “Y.O.U.”. Overall another worthy Avant release that should satisfy fans, however he does become a bit more raunchy lyrically and ups the tempo a bit from Director.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Some worthy downloads but not his best...

This album is definetly not Avant's best, however, there are some worthy downloads. I was impressed with "French Pedicure", "Attention", "Break Ya Back", "Y.O.U.", and "Sailing". The other songs are alright but they do not leave a lasting impression and are quite forgettable.
