Album Review

Avec Laudenum moves at a glacier's pace and, slowly yet surely, calls to mind the glazed eye, vacant trance, and pure (temporary) euphoria of the heavy laudanum user. "The Atomium," a three-part work, takes all of 16 minutes to gradually build from a series of softened drones into the exquisite ambience of an orchestra lulling heaven itself to sleep, only to halt the reverie by (just as gradually) introducing ominous backmasked guitars. Of the other two pieces, "Dust Breeding" has much the same effect and feeling of transcendence, while "I Will Surround You" has slightly more of a Technicolor feel. Reportedly recorded by mail between SotL members Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride, Avec Laudenum is a magnificent piece of minimalist ambience. [Originally released in 1999 by the Belgian Sub Rosa label, the album was reissued in America by Kranky in late 2002.]

Spectacular Minimalist Drone

After "The Tired Sounds," this is Stars of the Lid's best album. It is an *album* in the truest sense of the word. The "Atomium" tryptich really should be thought of as one piece - it delves over the course of all three of its components deeper and deeper into that space between the mind and the soul. "Dust Breeding" provides a gentle rest between the strong introspective tones of "Atomium" and the strangely aggressive "I Will Surround You." Any fan of drone would be well served by this album. It is pure and unfettered drone and deserves the title of classic. Someone who is new to drone will find this album a fantastic representative of the best the genre has to offer - but that is no guarantee someone who is unfamiliar with drone will like it. I certainly reccomend that anyone new to the music listen to the samples carefully to see if drone as a genre is appealing before buying (there are SOTL samples available on the label's website for instance).

It grinds my gears

It grinds my gears when people degrade the music based their experience with the Itunes download. Just because a song is crackling does not mean this album deserves 4 stars—I just had to get that out because I see this kind of thing a lot on Itunes. People think they are critiquing Apple and it reflects the band. this is five stars all the way. I think this might be their best album! It is very slow and silence becomes just as much a part of the music as the melody. Think a calm ocean shore or a gust of breeze through a forest. One of the best CD's I own.

Pops & Clicks

Previews sound great except for the pops & clicks. I guess I'll have to buy the CD.
