Album Review

Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil, and their self-titled release often focuses hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, while AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle-type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet; and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all — a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level, while others give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles. Vocalist M. Shadows, who required surgery on his vocal cords after Waking the Fallen, shows that his training with Ron Anderson (vocal coach for Layne Staley, Axl Rose, and Chris Cornell) has been for the greater good. Rather than screaming or doing the metal growl, he sings in a few gritty voices, showing an obvious Mike Patton influence, and actually sounds pitch-perfect. His skills and the entire band's technical ferocity are flawless as ever, and although they get lost in a cluttered vision, their willingness to experiment is admirable.

I must say this is a great album. Avenged Sevenfold is my second favorite band and it's cool to see how different this is from their older stuff. It really shows what they can do, which is awesome because now we know they can pull off pretty much anything. Here's what I think:

Critical Acclaim: 8/10 - A solid song, very political. I looove the ranting part, I don't know why.
Almost Easy: 9/10 - First song I'd heard off the album, a lot like their older stuff. Great solo, love Matt's voice in this.
Scream: 8/10 - A very dark song. It's strangely catchy in a sort of sick, haunting way. A very unique track, I must say.
Afterlife: 10/10 - My original favorite, this song just grabs you and holds you down, in a good way. Outstanding.
Gunslinger: 9/10 - I don't see why people don't like this one. Very sweet song, doesn't strike me as country at all.
Unbound (The Wild Ride): 10/10 - My favorite on the album. Love the lyrics. Matt has an astounding range. Buy it.
Brompton Cocktail: 9/10 - The first time you hear it, you won't stop listening for days. I like the story the lyrics tell a lot.
Lost: 10/10 - My second favorite off the album. Great message in the song, and again, astounding vocals by Matt.
A Little Piece of Heaven: 8/10 - Good, very creepy... it strikes me as love-or-hate, and I'm leaning towards the 'hate'.
Dear God: 9/10 - This was my favorite for a long time. I still love it. It's different than what we're used to from but it's still good.

Basically, if you're looking for something different from an insanely awesome metal band... buy it. If you're a huuuge fan of A7X and are really faithful to their old stuff (or anything else similar to that) then you won't like this one as much.

Best Album on the Market

a7x has done it again! Since Waking the Fallen they have proved that they are not afraid to try new things while still lying in the metal genre. Every song is great and this is a must buy. Heres my opinion on every song:

Critical Acclaim: This kick starts the album into overdrive.

Almost Easy: Fast song with amazing guitar riffs. Every band member sings in this song which is amazing.

Scream: My favorite song. Just a nice groove with heavy guitar and genious lyrics.

Afterlife: Amazing song with the best guitar solo ive ever heard. Lots of speed changes makes this song epic.

Gunslinger: This sounds like a smooth country song in the beggining and then gives you a heavy suprise.

Unbound(The Wild Ride): Amazing vocals, a very interesting melody through the whole song. My favorite song #2

Brompton Cocktail: Biggest suprise on the album. This song is great with the extra percussion thrown in.

Lost: The coolest duel guitar song ive ever heard. The vocals will also blow you away.

A Little Piece of Heaven: This song is the most unmetal song on the album but thats wat makes it great :)

Dear God: An excellent finish to this album. Its like another country song but the long guitar at the end does it.

All in all an amazing album! Every song never gets boring, but this is just my opnion. a7x is so cool to try these new things and if they make a new album im ready to see if they made even more changes :)
