Album Review
One would think that, after spending four years in Middle Earth providing Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy with its gargantuan Oscar-winning score, composer Howard Shore would take a little time off. Instead, the prolific Shore immediately set his sights on Martin Scorsese' s Howard Hughes biopic, The Aviator. Shore wastes little time in discarding his last project's epic choral arrangements and thunderous percussion, opting for a neo-classical feel that conjures up images of old silent films and pre-Cold War Hollywood — coincidentally, Shore's next project, Jackson's remake of King Kong, is set in the same sepia-toned period. This is Shore at his most elegant and free-spirited. From the dizzying "Icarus," with its Baroque tapestry of swirling strings giving sound to the wonder of flight, to the castanets that wander throughout, illuminating the Spanish influence that permeated the culture of 1930s southern California, The Aviator celebrates the "Golden Age" of cinema and music while simultaneously deconstructing it.

Shore Gets It Right!
Howard Shore appears to have created a genuinely unique score for "The Aviator", incorporating themes of the character along with the sense of flight, madness, and triumph. During the "Long Beach Harbour" piece is the superimposed radio broadcast of Hughes' flight of the Goose which makes listening to the score even more fun. Shore has a powerful score with "The Aviator."
Fanatsic
"Icarus" and "H-1 Racer Plane" are exhilerating. To get the music for the XF-11 test flight sequence, purchase "Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 (Stowkowski Transcription)". This soundtrack has a really unique character to it. Recommended for all lovers of the movie.
Well done, Howard Shore!
This film score is very well done, and it fits like a glove along with the movie. There are parts where it captures the sadness in Howard Hughes' insanity, for example, 'The Germ Free Zone', and 'Screening Room'. However, my personal favorites are '7000 Romaine', and 'Icarus'. I think this film score captures the emotion and the drama, along with Hughes' determination to get these planes into the air. I don't think Howard Shore could have done any better than what he did. This is truly a great score and I would highly recommend it.
