Album Review

Still singing about witches and devils, Fates Warning remained a metal band despite claims that this was their first progressive recording. Their aggressive sound remains from the first two efforts, and the song structures are too rudimentary to be called progressive. From this session one classic did emerge, "Guardian," a song that is still requested at their live shows. Progressive fans can skip this one too; however, metal fans are encouraged to pick it up, as it is a closet classic from the underground metal years of the '80s.

metal forged in New England

One of the things I like best about Fates Warning, is that you can't really understand any of the words John Arch is singing. I used to think he was singing in some Norwegian dialect. Regardless of what fans of Fates current music will tell you, this IS the best stuff. Along with Spectre Within, this record is pure genius. Night on Broken is a personal favorite, but it does not measure up to these two, although "Damnation" is outstanding. If you like the new Fates, go buy a new Rush album.

Overlooked Classic

Very underrated. This '86 classic features intricate riffing and bizzare, odd-time drumming, but it still manages to groove rather nicely. Unfortunately, this was the last Fates Warning album with John Arch's unique vocals on it. His brilliant (some might say strange) take on classic heavy metal vocals remains unmatched to this day.

All Time Classic

Even 20 some years later, I still hear new things in Awaken the Guardian. Every song is epic, with grand musicianship and inspiring lyrics. John Arch is still one of my personal favorite metal singers ever.

When prog rock first reared its head during the early '70s, it contained elements of hard rock, but few bands crossed the line into heavy metal. This all changed during the '80s, when bands such as Dream Theater, Watchtower, and Fates Warning merged their love of Yes and Rush with their admiration for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Formed in Hartford, CT in 1983, Fates Warning has endured quite a few lineup changes since its inception, with the exception of guitarist Jim Matheos, who has been present...
