Album Review
The third full-length album from Christian metalcore band blessthefall, the second release with Beau Bokan and the first with guitarist Elliott Gruenberg, who came on board after the departure of Mike Frisby, Awakening was produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette, who also produced the band’s previous album, Witness. Not much has changed, with plenty of screams, drop-tuned guitars, and double bass drums pushing things along, so fans will not be disappointed in this one.
Customer Reviews
i'm sad to say,
but awakening is just a bad album. I think anyone listening to it with a critical ear instead of just blindly consuming more post-hardcore music will come to the same conclusion I have. With Witness and the addition of Beau, they made a full changeover to the post-hardcore scene, but I least Witness had some catchy songs like 'Baby here's that song you wanted' and 'what's left of me.' Awakening has no such songs. everything, everything blends. and the screams are honestly terrible. I don't know how anyone who routinely listens to metal bands with screamo vocals can possibly excuse these vocals. A few vocal lines I literally cringed when hearing, and thats not a compliment. I'm sorry Blessthefall, but i'm not a fan of this at all. Please bring some heaviness and originality back to your music,
Sincerely,
A 'His Last Walk' fan
Whoa!
One of the best metalcore albums i've ever listened to! Also wayyy better than any typical Riscore band!
I Was Horribly Wrong.
Ok, so after hearing Witness for the first time I knew in an instant that Beau was the perfect fit to this band. Every song on Witness was unique and there were no "filler" songs. Once I heard that blessthefall was coming out with a new album I was concerned because I had thought they had done so well on their previous album that there'd just be no way to top it. When I first got this album I prepared to listen through it, I was worried that I would be biased as I would be comparing it to Witness and did not think it was possible to surpass. I am happy to say that I was horribly wrong. Awakening surpasses Witness in pretty much every way possible. Beau's lyrics continue to be in depth and meaningful and Jared contiues to perfect his screams. The guitar riffs and drums stay varied. Overall it seems as though each song has had more effort put into it and there wasn't a single disappointing track (although the Big Chocolate Remix is a little weird). I had the same issue with As I Lay Dying when they had first announced their 5th album The Powerless Rise. Yet they did the same as blessthefall and surpassed my expectations. It's good to see these bands (my 2 favorite!!!) continue to produce such quality work, as it shows that not all metal bands are going soft these days. In truth, the only bad thing that I can say about this album is that it only has 12 tracks (not including the remix), but if that's the worst that I can say about this album then that just goes to show how amazing it is.
