Looks on life, death, the final coming, shiny things, and banjos...
The subtitle for the album was cleverly given by it's lead thinker (DC himself, duh) as "The Eschatology of Bluegrass" (pronounced "Esk" and is defined as the study of theology involved in the things that are last; i.e. Death, Heaven and Hell, the final coming, etc.) The album's theme hints the final coming, feelings of loss, brokenness, redemption, salvation, darkness, light, shiny things, etc. through the use of some of the most influential of classic bluegrass and gospel hymns.
Let's look at the track listing here for “B Collision”:
01. Intro (I've Had Enough)
02. Beautiful Collision - B Variant
03. Wholly Yours - B Variant
04. Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven (LP) [the line then goes into "But nobody wants to die". How simple yet brilliant, thanks to Loretta Lynn.]
05. I Can Hear The Angels Singing/ (...andeverandeverand...)
06. Be Lifted*
07. I Saw The Light*
(*Performed live in Kansas with Robbie Seay band and Shane + Shane)
One of the things I love most about The David Crowder* Band is how this group of guys truly work as some of the most innovative reinventors of worship (I shall coin that description, thank you). Staying true to worship that dates back to St. Francis of Assisi, David Crowder Band has taken classical worship, redefining it and pushing its’ artistic limits, all while remaining true to the purpose of praise and worship music. Through styles of rock, pop, acoustic folk, techno, classical, and now bluegrass, DC*B takes modern styles of music and creates, or recreates worship in the most meaningful applications.
In September of 2005, DC*B released its album, “A Collision”. Their follow up album, “B Collision” releases in stores June 27th, 2006. “A Collision” is incredibly sentimental and personal for the whole band in that one major reason they were created was in response to the death of their friend from cancer.
B Collision is just the same: it’s incredibly personal and deals with the death of the Band’s best friend, Kyle Lake. Kyle Lake was a pastor of a church he helped found with David Crowder. He died of electrocution during a baptism ceremony (almost too much irony to bear) while the band was on tour.
When I listened to B Collision, it took a second listening for me to truly grasp the lyrics and rhythm in this album (Not that long a listen. The album is 30 minutes in length). When I listened to the Intro, I can immediately sense the pain in David Crowder’s voice. This album starkly contrasts the joyous tones in A Collision. From the joyous spontaneity of “A Collision’s” “Beautiful Collision”, to the melancholy bluegrass version of “Beautiful Collision (B Variant)”, the emotions and the mood of the song change almost completely. The B Variant songs are more subtle, yet so much more moving than it’s previous works. These tracks carry an almost unbearable amount of pain, joy, sorrow, and love from the band. Even the last 2 live tracks, performed in Kansas during their “Collision” Tour, carry a great deal of weight (performed less than a month after Kyle Lake’s death).
This album, while only 30 minutes in length, carries more emotion than any of DC*B’s previous works. As artists, their work reflects every experience they’ve dealt with. If you could call it the band’s blue period, “B Collision” expresses the emotions dealing with death and the hope and fear it brings.
I love this album. “Beautiful Collision” makes my heart beat so heavy it hurts, whether it be a result my own emotional high or just bad health (joke, laugh, ha ha). Regardless, this album makes me think. I think about my life, my faith, the fears and feelings I deal with on a daily basis. Through the pains and experiences David Crowder* Band had to deal with, I can feel them as well (Sorry, that probably doesn’t make any sense). This album carries great weight with it and remains a great piece of both worship and bluegrass.
I hope this album brings something to you when you listen to it (feelings, emotions, shiny things, whatever). Catch you on the flip side!

different, interesting, and yet still AMAZING!!!. A MUST HAVE
I have been an avid fan of DCB for the past few years. I own everything they have put out. While I openly admit that they put on the most amazing performances, their studio work is still just amazing and inspiring. Illuminate was groundbreaking and awesome, and followed by A Collision, which was a audio experience reminiscent to lifelong trek, a beautiful story of life all woven together.
With B Collision, we see a differnt side of the first album. Its a more gentle, heartfelt journey through this musical odyssey. With the soft vibrant tones, usage of banjo and more synth, a new FRESH look at music we love from A collision. Adding the LIVE tracks, adds a variance to this album which definitely changes the pace. It doesnt quite capture the life and energy of the 'ho-down' experience of the Collision tour, but its a close second to it. I would imagine with a great sound system and these live tracks cranked to eleven, you might feel right there.
The overal bluegrass tones throughout this release have a sense of historical importance, as older songs are revisted. At the same time, we step in to the future with new sounds. A great Collision of old and new, all brought together to worship our God. David Crowder Band has done an amazing thing once again. Buy the whole album, you will be pleased!
Melody Meets Maturity
When I bought my first DCB album in the summer of '98, I really believed God was doing a new thing through the genuine worship in songs like "He Is The Love" and "Lift My Eyes." I am encouraged to find that, with each new release, the David Crowder Band continues to show the maturity that comes with making praise a habit.
