Customer Reviews

Sublime.

Absolutely unbelievable, the quality, the tone, the pitch, color, dynamics, it is perfection. Glenn Gould was and is an amazing pianist who deserves all the praise which is given to him. The Art of Fugue seems to culminate Glenn Gould's career and Bach's work into an album of beauty and self-expression, the likes of which is not seen too much today. It doesn't get any better than this.

The Best

I agree with Tonecolor. This recording is at the peak of Gould's career. This is as close as you can get to perfection.

The cultural cure

This is essential for any library. The Contrapunctus XIV is Bach's last Fugue, stopping suddenly during the composition. On U-Tube, one can see the past master, Glenn Gould, discuss this very fugue. When it ends, suddenly, abrupt and final, it makes a listener stop breathing...for a moment or two moments. The fugue, having lost it's popularity in Bach's lifetime...but not now. Imagine Bach learning of computers, CD's, buying his music via electrons streaming over wires across continents, forever. Perhaps they, the great masters, knew their creations were eternal, of course, to the degree we are all eternal. This CD contains a musical antidote for ennui, for the past forgotten, an eternal revival of the fugue, Bach, and, of course, the magnificent Glenn Gould. Jim Adams, Cleveland, MS

The most renowned Canadian classical performer of the 20th century, pianist Glenn Gould remains one of the most fascinating and celebrated figures in all of music, the archetypal riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a conundrum. A former child prodigy, his piano artistry was unparalleled, yet he often received less recognition as a virtuoso than as a troubled eccentric; a disconnected recluse notorious for such odd habits as wearing a wool topcoat in the dog days of summer, Gould was a...
