Bach Collegium SD Bach Motets
What a fantastic album. This is one of the most unique sounding groups I have ever heard. The sound is rich and warm while still holding true to the period practice. You find yourself getting lost in the beautiful sweeping lines of one of the great masters and stunned by the depth and richness of tone. There is so much energy in this recording, where many fall into a dull recitation of the difficult writing this group has managed to capture the spirit of each motet and engage their audience at every turn. The Jesu Meine Freude is breathtaking. It flows so smoothly from full choir to demi-choir and back again, showing off the many colors of this ensemble. Also of note is the use of basso-continuo, particularly the Theorbo and Violone. A masterful touch to add even more color to a vocal ensemble that runs the gamet from rich and powerful to lighter more Monteverdian women and from English Counter-Tenor to dark Contralto. I can't wait to hear more from this ensemble and hope that other follow in their example. Early music is in for quite a wild ride in the near future with work like this going on!
