It is as if I am hearing the universe become balanced

Glenn Gould is most certainly an eccentric genius who plays with such clarity and beauty. The way he places his hands and always uses the same chair on the piano is how he played. Nobody else in the world can ever imitate Glenn Gould. What he played was true artistic music. It is as if I am listening to some musical force telling me that the world is breathing and that the universe is balanced. I have never heard anything like it.

Inspiring

I believe nothing in this life is better than listening to Gould playing a Bach partita, other than listening to Gould playing 3 Bach partitas! In each partita, each note, as well as the whole work, connect the listener to an amazing world of ideas, motion and hopes. Gould touches the deepest areas in our souls with every sound and every silence. However, this is not guaranteed before one gets over the almost unbelievable technical perfection and mastery of the instrument. Good luck to all!

My personal favorite

The Bach Partitas no.4 are my favorite recordings of Gould. It's something about this particular Bach material that seems to provoke Gould to even greater contrapuntal heights, and an even deeper level of introspection as well. It's as if he IS Bach. I have almost all of Goulds' recordings, love every one of them, especially his very last recording, of Richard Strauss' first Piano Sonata, for it's similar "at home" introspective quality, and Mozarts' Piano Sonatas, for their extreme level of stark experimentation. But the Partitas no.4 have perhaps all of the great aspects of Goulds' playing all in one.

The most renowned Canadian classical performer of the 20th century, pianist Glenn Gould remains one of the most fascinating and celebrated figures in all of music, the archetypal riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a conundrum. A former child prodigy, his piano artistry was unparalleled, yet he often received less recognition as a virtuoso than as a troubled eccentric; a disconnected recluse notorious for such odd habits as wearing a wool topcoat in the dog days of summer, Gould was a...
