Sad, Predictable, and Unnecessary
Yet another classical "star" cranks out a mediocre and thoughtless rendition of these amazing, mind-bending meisterwerke. For an idea of how terrible this recording really is, compare Ms. St. John's g-moll fuga from sonata #1 with that of the incomparable Sigiswald Kuijken (who, unlike Lara, actually plays his violin IN TUNE and musically). It's so sad to see how far the Classical music industry has fallen in the last 15 years, and this recording is just another log on the fire. Rest in Peace, JS . . . Rest in Peace
This ranks dead last among my 10+ recordings
Interesting and different, but not in tune (yes, I know her pedigree and read her commentary on why it's 'tuned' this way) but her pitch inconsistent both in the absolute pitch and relative choice of dissonance throughout. It's very distracting from the organic beauty of the music. I'll take Szeryng, Mintz or Milstein any day over this recording.
Unquestionably the finest Bach set ever recorded
This is some of the finest violin playing I have ever heard. As a professional violinist who has spent decades studying these pieces it is a delight for me to hear St. John navigate through every musical and technical difficulty with dazzling ease. Her intonation is flawless, and her musical ideas do justice to the greatness of the music. I don't expect to hear a better Bach set in my lifetime.
