Touching!
There is something touchingly old-fashioned about this attractive collection of Bach arias that feature the violin, and it has clearly been a labour of love for young violinist Hilary Hahn to draw together friends and colleagues for the project. Great moments like a duet from the cantata "Wachet auf" and a bass aria with flute and violin find Goerne and Schäfer well-matched. She is over-excitable though in "Laudamus te" from the B minor Mass, while he is superb in his St Matthew Passion aria. Hahn plays with richer vibrato than her singers but the results are always transparent.
Interesting effort
though most definatally not for the barouqe specialist. Hahn assembles a slection of Bach arias that features her playning with that of Schafer and Goerne. The album as a whole doesn't flow all that well but does showcase the love of the music that each involved has. It's a modern rendering yet not overbearing as previous efforts had been. She mentions that almost from the pram she was prompted to explore the souvivours of Peas, Ponselle, Fischer-Dieskau and the like and this informs her approach, albeit a lighter one then those previously mentioned. She also maintains that her interest in this experiment sprang from her exposure to Barber's "Dover Beach" a connection I fail to fully understand. Nevertheless It is a lovley album that explores the many facets of Bach in song and in stimmung. You wouldn't be put out at all to start the new year off with this. -Bz

Just got this CD, and it is beautiful and moving. Nobody does Bach like Hilary! When are you gonna record the other three solo sonatas, Hilary?
