Album Review
The album starts off quietly enough, a bit more somber than most (hed) pe records with lead vocalist Jahred, and things are more introspective than usual with the band. With the album's opener, "Listen," Jahred abandons the raunch that was so abundant in Only in Amerika, and in its place gives his perspective on the current state of world political affairs, with the result sounding more like former Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha than his own usual venomous rap-metal delivery. This anomaly is just that, as the rest of the band brings back the crunchy, detuned guitar licks and vicious percussion that are part thrash, part hip-hop. But Back 2 Base X suffers from the same problems as Amerika: it tries to be conceptual in thought à la Tool and vicious in its political commentary à la Fugazi or System of a Down, but somehow falls short by sounding like an angry stoner on a soapbox. It won't win any new fans, but existing fans of (hed) pe's work won't be turning their backs away from the band in anger anytime soon, either.
Customer Reviews
Grows like a fungus
I loved Broke as soon as I popped it into my CD player in 2001, and bought their self-titled soon after that and loved it. Blackout was a bit of a disappointment for me, but when I saw them live this summer they didn't play one song off of it so I chalk it up to a misfire. Only In Amerika I hated at first, but now is my favorite hed CD... Next to this one. This CD was disappointing at first because it doesn't sound as cohesive as the other releases, but it sure covers a lot of ground. Like another reviewer said, this has hip hop, rock, punk, metal, and even reggae influences (they did a wonderful cover of a Bob Marley song in concert when I saw them this summer and he is obviously a role model for the band for his revolutionary music and attitude). Give this CD a few spins, appreciate the fact that they are trying to bring things back to basics (look at the title- this CD was recorded live in a studio so no fancy touch ups here). This CD is raw sounding, and covers a lot of great genres and blends them together very well. This is a very good release that really puts music back to where it should be without scrubbing the sound to death in the production stages.
Don't Listen To Bad Reviews
You will notice in these negative reviews that they all bring up ST and Broke. These are great albums, but come on, stop living in the past; people change, and music changes too. Broke will always be my favorite album, however that does not stop me from giving this album five stars. The album in its entirety is great; there are some individual songs that are not my favorite (Get Ready, Daze of War, Lets Ride) but they fit into the mood of the album. There are songs here, musically and Lyrically, that show Hed pe at their best (Sophia, Lock and Load, Beware Do We Go, White Collars, Sweetchops, The Chosen One). Don't listen to these reviews, they are from listeners who live in the past. They are currently working on a new album, and I am confident that it will be great, possibly Broke status. Old fans stick around, and new fans are welcome.
BEWARE FAIRWEATHER FANS
itunes sums it up nicely, but to add... This album is not as dense as their self titled or as polished as Broke. However it is more comfortable. They figured out a little more about themselves and what type of music they're trying to make. Rounded corners and soft commercialism failed as a concept on Blackout. This is smarter with deeper themes and harder edges. The thinking man's angry music, if you will. SINGLES SEEKERS and FAN WEATHER FANS probably won't enjoy it, and that's ashame, for them.
