iTunes Review

Quiet Storm hardly died in 1978 or 1987, and it was most certainly a living thing when Brian McKnight dropped his fifth album, Back at One, in 1999. A heartfelt but often musically witty disc, it throws curveballs while never breaking Rule One — staying beautiful and as seduction-friendly as anything of its moment. McKnight acknowledges hip-hop with a Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins production of “Played Yourself” (the one song here that allows even a possibly rude sentiment toward a woman), mixes steel guitar accents with lovely grouped harmonies on “6, 8, 12” and dabbles with Latin-lite beats on “You Could Be the One” and “Can You Read My Mind.” He even gets laughed at by his friends by appearing in public with a supposedly unsavory date on “Stay or Let It Go.” Back at One is a strong and amusing effort.
