iTunes Review

On Back to Black, her second album and U.S. debut, singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse defines her own tradition. With a deeply personal touch, she commands settings that meld torchy doo-wop era ballads, soul and girl-group slammers, and current hip-hop winners. Winehouse, already famous in her native England for reckless, tipsy behavior, topped the charts there with “Rehab,” a construction that wraps her protests that Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway are more help than a clinic could be in a forthright tribute to early-’60s radio that does the Ronettes and the Drifters proud. Despite the buzz from that instant anthem, Back to Black doesn’t shy from the heartbroken — and not just in the “Me and Mr. Jones”’ complaint that she missed a Slick Rick show. The title track brings the real pain, one more in an album of performances that certify the 23-year-old Winehouse as an undeniable master.

Soulful and Magnificent.

Her voice transcends the fact that she is, indeed, a skinny white girl from Britain singing Motown and soulful R&B. Her writing is superb and her style is articulate and engaging, and she's in-your-face enough to reel you in. Once the shock wears off over her lack of fear of using explicit lyrics (as with her first album), the true artistry of her music seeps in, and it has such staying power. It's a true modern classic in the R&B genre, if only for the fact that there's been like it before. Highlights: --Rehab --Me and Mr Jones --Love is a Losing Game --Tears Dry On Their Own --He Can Only Hold Her

Kids, I present you...

Music. Take all the other crap you've bought recently and throw it in the trash. Amy Winehouse is here to save the universe! Infectious melodies, blunt lyrics, and catchy hooks will keep this entire set on repeat. The only down side: the US release omits a fantastic track called "Addicted" which is on the UK set. Apparently, America can't handle a song about smoking weed. WHATEVER! Now iTunes needs to secure the US rights to her first CD "Frank."

?UESTLOVE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THIS ALBUM!!!

Simply incredible. This `60's Soul sound is a breath of fresh air compared to what's being played on the radio today. "Love Is A Losing Game" is an instant classic. And "Tears Dry On Their Own", "Some Unholy War" and the title track all sound like they could be remakes from a powerhouse soul singer from the '60's but they are all original songs. Amy's voice and the albums production using live instruments will greet you, but it's Amy's wit and grit that will stay with you long after you listen to it. With songs about rehab and infidelity, Amy makes some taboo topics sound as if she were singing about the birds and the bees. I first heard of Ms. Winehouse when she appeared on ?uestlove's Top 10 Albums of 2006. I immediately searched for her music but iTunes only had a single. I'm glad they finally have her album available. You should definately give it a spin! -SoulPro

Much can be said about the late Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K.'s flagship vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and tabloids seemed to focus on her rowdy behavior, heavy consumption of alcohol, and tragic end, but fans and critics alike embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals. Her platinum-selling breakthrough album, Frank (2003), elicited comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. Interestingly...
