iTunes Review

Phish’s fourteenth studio album is more of a birthday party than a reunion. The band was only “broken up” for five years, but the bubbling opener “Backwards Down the Number Line” celebrates Phish’s 25th anniversary with the lyrics “Happy happy oh my friend/ Blow out candles once again.” And the closing number “Twenty Years Later” reflects on their journey. Working with producer Steve Lillywhite for the first time since 1996’s Billy Breathes, most of Joy plays with an optimistically buoyant bounce. Many lyrics deal with deeper issues like Trey Anastasio’s battle with hard drugs, and “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” grapples with losing his sister to cancer. The title track is a nostalgic serenade for a muse named Joy, who may be the personification of Phish fans. “Time Turns Elastic” is the album’s golden opus. Over more than thirteen minutes this nouveau-prog epic takes more turns than a mouse in a maze, and what’s even more amazing is that after having recorded 278 takes, it still bursts with the life and excitement of a new song.

Wish i could give negative stars

Phish is not rock. Some of the biggest garbage i have ever heard. backwards down the # line is the biggest peice of $#!& i have ever listened to. I hate them. They have gone off the deep-end with all the acid they did. Phish appeals to people when they are high off acid. Thats also the only way they can bear themselves. they put out so many albums kuz all they do is get high and just randomly play to some vocals written down in five minutes. they call themselves the innovators of improvising, and i don't think that being too stoned to remember what to play counts as "improv". Phish has been out of water too long, a place where they never should have been in the first place.

Going Backwards Down the Number Line

When I was a small kid (around 1994-ish), my mom took me to Darien Lake Center where Phish was playing and she told me throughout the set that "I love them!" when Joy came out, she bought it immediately and popped it in and asked me if I remembered them. The beginning track, Backwards Down the Number Line, got me started...again. Now I own fifteen of their Live Series (one being the Darien Lake performance ;) and I own about nine of their studio works.) Joy makes it ten :) I love Phish!!! This album made my fanbase in Phish even stronger. Great album!!!

I deem Joy most AWESOMEST! I'm with SoPhast! Joy and Sugar Shack are best; CAN'T WAIT 2 see 'em LIVE again in 34 daze! I 've been SO DEPRESSED since hiatus, but breaks are great 4 re-phreshing. This IS PHISH, matured, in a happy place, and commin' straight phrom the heart. Reminds me of Rift and Lawnboy.
And YES... When you hear Possum on the radio you GET IT! HIGHNESSTY

Biography

Formed: 1983 in Burlington, VT

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

During the early '90s, Phish emerged as heirs to the Grateful Dead's throne. Although their music was somewhat similar to the Dead's sound — an eclectic, free-form rock & roll encompassing elements of folk, jazz, country, bluegrass, and pop — the group adhered more to jazz-derived improvisation...
