iTunes Review

Following an 11-year period that saw him abandon his own projects for work in film soundtracks, Randy Newman was coaxed into making another solo album in 1999. Producers Tchad Blake and Mitchell Froom give Bad Love an organic, rotund feel, and the arrangements are full of punch and surprise. As usual, Newman is preoccupied with what he sees as humanity’s fundamental flaws: hubris, vanity and ignorance. His work in movies seems to have made him more theatrical and also more hilarious, often in the same song, as evidenced by “The World Isn’t Fair.” As the world approaches the millennium and Newman pushes 60, the songwriter can’t avoid ruminating on the ruin brought about by the passage of time. It surfaces repeatedly, whether he’s dealing with relationships (“Better Off Dead,” “Shame,” “I’m Dead (But I Don’t Know It)”) or the state of American attitudes (“My Country,” “Big Hat, No Cattle”). As his complaints become more pointed, his kindness in turn becomes deeper. Between his satires he disarms us with “I Miss You” and “Going Home,” firm, faithful resolutions bobbing in a sea of frustration.

Great

What you love about Randy Newman is that he has a specific sound to his music which makes it unmistakeable, this cd contains ever thing that his music stand for tragedy, sterotypes, and life in its truest form

One of the Great Albums of All Time

I find it odd that this isn't a more heralded album. This is certainly one of the top Five Randy Newman albums, and therefore, one of the great albums of all time. "I Miss You" is perhaps the most complex, stinging and yet soulful and real ballads ever penned. Every Time it Rains is sweet and genuinely moving. And then there are the handful of acerbic, brilliant, and musically delightful tunes that you expect from Newman at his best. What more can anyone want? This album is the one that makes you ask, "Why isn't Randy Newman considered in the same league is Bob Dylan?"

Randy Newman is a freaking genius

Just listen to "I Miss You." I love lyrics that really say something. He can do it all. Sometimes he misses the mark, but that is because he tries stuff. I love Randy Newman.

Randy Newman was an anomaly among early-'70s singer/songwriters. Though he was slightly influenced by Bob Dylan, his music owed more to New Orleans R&B and traditional pop than folk. Newman developed an idiosyncratic style that alternated between sweeping, cinematic pop and rolling R&B, which were tied together by his nasty sense of humor. Where his peers concentrated on confessional songwriting, Newman drew characters, creating a world filled with misfits, outcasts, charlatans, and con men....
